Daylight In Australia and here at the same time

I learned something today, that I have understood
wrongly all my life.

I was doing my ironing and put the TV on for some
noise, I usually watch football, because it is normally
Saturday, but today I found an Australian Football
game, in my sports channel, it said "Live", as it was
10:45 AM, here, I thought that it was night-time in
Australia, but it wasn't, it was sunny!

Knowing that we are practically on opposite sides
of the World, I didn't expect that, I even checked
time, in Perth, Western Australia and found that it
is only 8 hours ahead of here.

So the daylight spread of the Sun is huge, a lesson
learned.

I already knew that, hollydolly, I was surprised that they
had daylight, when we had daylight.

Fascinating.

This image shows Perth in 'Daylight' at 10:45 in the UK. The divisions toward the right, after the daylight area, are Civil Twylight, Nauticle Twylight, and Astronomical Twylight. Then, 'Darkness' pretty much runs through Sydney.

I think a lot of our perceptions of things can be born out of popular phrasing. From a UK perspective, Australia is often described as being the 'other side of the world', so we often develop a 'sense' based on that popular phrasing, even when it's inaccurate. We can all be susceptible to it.

In actual fact, now I've just checked, the opposite side of the world from us is near the Antipodes Islands, southwest of New Zealand. Pretty much in line with Midway Atol in the Pacific Ocean.

Being a cricket fan I’ve been aware of the Perth issue for years.
When England are in in OZ next year the Perth test will be in progress when it’s got light here.
At least one poster lives in Perth…

We were told that New Zealand was opposite
the UK, when I was at school.

Many here refer to Australians as "Antipodeans",
meaning that they are the other side of a sphere,
when they aren't really

I can drive my wife mad, if I talk with her about Civil Twylight, Nauticle Twylight and Astronomical Twylight. She says "twilight is twilight and that's enough". The look of her former physics teacher, as she told him the same twenty years ago, was priceless :ROFLMAO:
