Dead Bird in Basement

I was telling a woman at church yesterday that when I moved the boxes of garage sale things, I found a dead bird and wondered how it got there. Looks like it had been there for a while - it was like mummified, but enough left to tell it was a young robin. The woman suggested it may have flown down the chimney, but I really don't have a chimney per-se, the only things protruding from the roof are two vent pipes for the bathrooms. I have an oil-fueled hot water baseboard heating system which is vented on an exterior wall which can just be seen in the upper right of this photo. It is covered with a plate with holes much too small for a bird to get through.

It may have come in your house when you had doors propped open and then got lost in the house.

Or it may have settled into your garage sale boxes last year when you were packing up for the season.

During nesting season they will do anything to find a safe place for their young.

I don't know. That's sad. My mother and stepfather had one fly into their wood stove once. They put all the cats in the bedroom, opened the front door and then let it out. After a few fly arounds, it safely went out the door.
