Debodun`s thread on surviving made me think of this couple....

They may have been mentioned on here the past week or so but I have been down with the flu so may have missed it.

Anyway, the couple disappeared on Valentine`s Day down in a small coastal town about 90 minutes from me. They had no phones,no jackets,no food or water. They were found alive on Feb.22nd-8 days after they disappeared. The men who found them say that they were hired to do a recovery that day-not a rescue. It was presumed that they had to be dead, and waterways were being searched. But they were found alive-and not in bad shape at all. It`s really amazing.

He is a a very well known Parkinson`s researcher and she is a writer,so I`m sure she will be writing about their experience.

The rescue dog that found the couple was a golden retriever named'Groot' named after the tree character in movie'Guardians of the Galaxy"

Actually,Groot`s handler said that Groot did not really find the couple-the couple was found because the two rescuers heard the couple calling for help. The handler didn`t really say,but I think Groot is a trained cadaver dog,as that is what they were expecting to find that day. I think he did say that they sent Groot in first when they made voice contact with the couple as the heavy brush took a bit for them to get through.

I did hear this morning that they say they had just walked down to watch the sunset, then got lost on the way back to their cabin. That makes more sense as to why they didn`t have phones or jackets or water-a walk just to watch the sunset would only take a few minutes.

I also saw on the news report that her son says she's an herbalist and into that outdoor-sy stuff which he is sure contributed to their survival. They drank pooled water and she knew what plants were edible. A happy ending to what people thought may have been a grim discovery.

I think everyone thought it would be a grim discovery-I know I did.And obviously the searchers did as well-saying they were not sent out as rescuers that day,but as recoverers. It had been cold at night that week-in the 30s. I know that`s not very cold to some, but those of us who live here consider that pretty darn cold. And with no jackets?Brrrrrr. And,of course, being elderly just compounds the effects of that. Must be one tough couple!

I can understand getting disoriented in the dark. But when morning came, didn't they have any idea which way they had come? Had it been me, I'd have stayed put for the night, then I'd have tried to backtrack. I sure wouldn't have gone stumbling off into denser woods. If you're not familiar with the territory, stick to the trail. I'm glad they came out ok.
