It's time to honor the humble chestnut .

Every Christmas holiday we sing about "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."But,
have you ever roasted chestnuts.

It may surprise you to know that some people have never even tasted a chestnut.

The date to celebrate Roast Chestnuts Day was selected to coincide with
the beginning "The Twelve Days of Christmas".

The tradition of roasting has been around for a long time.

When they are roasted, the natural sweetness of the nut is revealed, delighting our taste buds.

And, yes, I have...years ago, one crispy, cool fall day our family went to a State Park with my parents good friend ( a couple)
She was quite a cook and brought along chestnuts that we roasted on an open 🔥 fire.
They have a unique taste.

I haven't ever roasted them myself, but I do remember decades ago, getting small warm bags of them, from street vendors, on freezing cold winter days, outdoors, in NYC. brrrrr......I still remember vividly, how freezing cold the air was, and how comforting the warm bag in my hands felt, and the roasted chestnuts were very delicious and satisfying!

Thanks for reminding me, with the thread topic!

Myself, I personally didn't associate them with Christmas. Just with the extreme cold weather, and how very welcome a treat they were!

Yes, it reminded me of that State Park event...or don't think would have ever experienced.
Thanks for the " visual" post!

Gosh, I was going to share this exact same story I'd shared with sf friends, long ago.
Why didn't I remember I had? ☺️

Thanks for bringing back this peaceful, toasty memory, this evening in 2024, @Jace
