Decorate Your Own Home?

So.... my wife had told me she's unhappy with the decoration of our home. Not that it's in bad condition, just the colors are wrong, and.... well lots of things only women notice.

Personally, I don't really care. If she wants things redone, then redo them. No problem. Aesthetically, I'm an imbecile. The only thing I have demands about is lighting. I'm quite specific about that. Everything else? Don't care.

But here's the thing.... she wants us to decorate together. Paint walls. Paint ceiling. goodness knows......

Me? Nah. Pay someone. Get someone in who will do it much more quickly, and with a better end result. We're kind of stuck on that point......

Do you decorate yourself, or get someone in? And what about in old age, does that change?

I always ask for spousal input, as it is his house also.

fortunately we have similar tastes!

No longer are doing the painting or carpentry. We saved money doing it ourself way back when.

As far as choices, we try to work together. There’s not much we’re replacing any more. There’s one thing he won’t back down on and it that stupid dining room table and chairs. I’ve hated it for years decades. He bought it and it was built to last and it sure does.

Pssst, maybe she wants to poke you with a paintbrush, you will poke her back, she will get a hand full and rub it on you, you will then grab and hand full.....get the picture by the end of it you are too messy to get it all yourself which leads you to the shower

I have a really funny story that, sadly, I could never divulge here.

Nope, I'm way past painting, laying tile, etc.

Either a professional does it or it doesn't get done.

He wants it all white; I like the color it was when we bought the house. We'll never meet in the middle.

My late husband and I used to do everything ourselves. I did the planning (with his input), he did the building, I did the finish work.

Fast forward until now, I was doing everything myself until about a year ago. Now I still do the planning and finish work, hiring out the construction type stuff.

I think that it’s important to learn or understand a few of the traditional decorating rules.

I also believe that it’s important to let things sort of happen or evolve in a controlled but not contrived way if you want your surroundings to reflect who you are.

As far as the actual work, I would hire it done but that’s me.

Maybe your wife’s desire to make this a family project is about something else, be a good sport and go with the flow.
