Dental work in Mexico

A friend posted on FB that she goes to Mexico for dental work because it is much less expensive. She lives in Arizona, so not a huge trip for her. I just wonder if it's a case of "You get what you pay for." I know I paid almost $400 this year for and cleaning, 4 bite-wings and checkup. I remember when the dentists did the cleanings, now it's a dental tech that does the actual work and the dentist just steps in about a minute to glance in your mouth. I guess dentists doing cleanings went out with doctors making house calls.

Dental hygienists have been around for a long time now Deb; long before doctors stopped making house calls.
My parents doctor made a house call last year so it’s not ‘that’ outdated.

As a child I remember the actual dentist cleaning my teeth, but that was in the 1950s. Back then, the local ones were small, one-man businesses.

My sis, her husband and lots of their friends go to Mexico for dental work and all their meds (they winter in Southern Texas)......they think it’s a good deal, me? Not so sure.

I think the dental offices in Mexico also do cosmetic surgery in the back room.
Or in the parking lot.......

After what I've learned about what a bad dentist can do, I wouldn't save any money on dental visits; it can cost you your life.
Remember, you have NO WAY of knowing if the instruments were sterilized, & you can end up with a disease from the previous 50 patient's mouths. The standards of care may be different in Mexico.

Interesting....a few days ago, I watched a TV show called "Monsters Inside Me" on the Discovery Life channel. That episode showed a lady who had some dental work done in Mexico, and contracted a Parasite that almost killed her. Apparently, when she had a tooth pulled, there was likely some contamination on the dental tools that weren't properly sanitized, and a "worm larvae" was able to invade her gum where the tooth was pulled, and got into her bloodstream. After days in the ICU, and massive infusions of drugs, she was able to survive. She probably saved a few dollars by going to Mexico, but it almost killed her, and probably cost thousands of dollars to cure. "Penny Wise, and Pound Foolish".

There are a lot of reviews of Mexican dentists on RVing forums. Apparently a lot of RVers travel down to Nogales or other border towns. Most I have read have been very pleased with the work and the cost, but I have no first-hand experience.

Absolutely. I had a friend that went to a dentist in Mexico and picked up one of those oral diseases that has slipped my mind. He went to a dentist back home and was told that what he had was probably caused by crossed contamination. Several hundred or a few thousand dollars later, he had it cured.

People all of the world go to dentists and I would use a dentist in another country if it was an emergency.

I would not go to another country for medical or dental work because the standards of care may be different and the laws are different if things don't go according to plan.

I live in New Mexico and I know several people who travel to Mexico for dental work like implants, caps, veneers, etc. -- fancy stuff -- also false teeth. They all seem very pleased with results and go back if they need something else done.

My neighbor says the only difference between a good dentist in Mexico and a good dentist in the US is several thousand dollars.

Of course, people who do this successfully get recommendations for providers from friends or family and also research the providers before they make appointments, just like they would if they were going to a new dentist here.

It's quite possible for nothing to go wrong with discounted medical care in Mexico. Sometimes it can be done right & perhaps some people have very efficient immune systems that can prevent illness from improperly-sterilized equipment. People who save thousands of dollars are so delighted, they will naturally sing the praises.
