Dentists under pressure to drill ‘healthy teeth’ for profit, former insiders allege

Johannah Lancaster took her 3-year-old son to Dental Express for his first checkup, expecting a routine cleaning.

She never imagined the treatment plan the Niles, Ohio, dentist would come up with after he peeked into Gregory’s mouth for what seemed like only two or three minutes.

Michael Griesmer said the preschooler needed root canals – seven of them. Stunned, Lancaster asked why he had not even taken X-rays. Griesmer told her they weren't necessary.

These days all dentists are notorious for adding additional work when it isn't needed.
My hubby recently went for a cleaning. The dentist said he had to have them deep cleaned. His mouth was sore for two weeks after and now they are sensitive to hot and cold. Something he never had a problem with.
I don't go unless I have a problem and then I ask to have the tooth pulled. Less money and less pain. When it gets to be down to the last few I'll get dentures.

I watched a tv show called Whistleblowers last year and these dental situations were on there....the dentists who accept Medicaid for the kids get paid nothing, unless they find a hundred procedures to perform in each kid's mouths.....the young ones everywhere have gold crowns, root canals, etc. without the xrays....its all over the U.S. (then they rake in the dough at the government's expense and put the kids thru traumatic dental work they dont need....the parents buy into all this fakery of course)....I've seen it first hand done to my granddaughter and her half brother.

Dentists are in a perfect place to commit the perfect crime. Once teeth are drilled, the evidence that shows if there was any decay or infection is gone, so there's no way to prove anything.
I've posted about my previous problems with scam dentists - including some with previously-honest dentists that I had been seeing for years. And in this economy, it's much worse - in all professions.

Dental cleanings are likewise a big profit-maker, and the price for one seems to have gone up much faster than the rate of inflation. I've also fallen into a pattern where my old dental fillings are found to have developed cracks, and the dentist wants to drill them out and replace them with new ones. This rarely happens as the tooth falls apart with the drilling, necessitating placement of a crown to the tune of over $1,000... :(

Lucky I've got an honest dentist. If it ain't broke they don't try to fix it. I'm usually telling them what to look for. Do believe in cleanings though. Think that saves teeth. Think that root canals can be a giant hole into which you pile money. Getting a root canal weakens the tooth. I have 3 or 4 that have been successful and one that has not. No more for me I think, not at this stage of my life.

I've had issues with medical bills but a dental practice was the only one to double bill me and/or violate an approved payment plan. I had a good dental plan for years but one year I had used up a lot of the benefits early in the year so I wanted save some for later in the in case of emergency. The office manager had approved a standard payment plan after running a credit check(excellent). The head dentist insisted my plan be billed. I called the practice billing office which was associated with a local college and they 'these things happen' like it was nothing new or unique. Didn't get back interest on several months of payments either.

Years ago when we had good dental insurance, we were going to a dentist who over treated us. I suspected something wasn't quite right when he started replacing perfectly good fillings. Then he insisted that I needed a root canal that was supposed to take 2 trips to the dental office that turned into 4 and weren't done yet. When the dragon lady, employed as his head receptionist, insisted work needed to be done that wasn't what the dentist told me, I fired him. The dentist that I found to finish up my dental work told me that a lot of Dr. Crook's former patients had switched to their office. We stayed with him until he retired~the best dentist ever.
