Developing Allergies Later in Life.

I've never had allergies. Ever. Recently I became very symptomatic and went to the doctor. I'm on medication and nose spray. I refused the allergy shot. I'm better but I can't smell or taste anything.

Since I'm in Northern California, I'm not sure if it's related to our lack of rain making allergies worse.

Has anyone developed sudden allergies when they were older?

I knew a guy who developed hay fever after drinking those wheat grass smoothies three days in a row! So it definitely can happen and I feel so bad for you.

He'd never had allergies in his life and there was a juice bar near a job he was working at. The third day, right after his smoothie, he suddenly started feeling sick like he had a severe case of the flu and then his nose started running, eyes swelled......from that time since, he's been miserable the minute the spring arrives.

My ex son in law had severe hay fever and after a few years of shots, he's finally getting away from it but I don't know if they help everyone. I'm glad that you're doing better though.

I never had allergies until my late 40's and they became worse and worse and I became allergic to more and more items. It's mostly anything perfumey, cleaning chemicals, mold, scented candles are a nightmare, possibly dust. It's all year long, of course, as I have no problems with natural scents like flowers, etc.

I only got on prescription antihistamines about 3 years ago - ceterizine - and a nasal spray - flonase. My symptoms are different depending on the allergen. Coughing for mold. Runny nose for some scents, a full blown sinus headache for heavy scents.

I use unscented toiletries although Pantene shampoo doesn't bother me.

Thanks for your replies. This started about a 1 1/2 weeks ago. I've been exposed to cats since I was very very young, so I don't think it's my cats and my doctor didn't think so either. Plus I'm not worse at home. That's really really strange about those smoothies. I don't think I ate anything different. The only thing I can think of is I got a flu shot for the first time this year. Probably not related.

My doctor offered the allergy shot but I didn't want to take it at this point. I'm taking Singulair and Flonase now.

Kitties, the last two times I've been in California, I had allergy problems, one was a rash on face with my eyes swollen to, I blamed it on the different flora.

One of the worst reactions for me was I decided to try a hypoallergenic face lotion because it was on sale. My eyes were nearly swelled shut!

The other was I walked into a Bath and Body type of shop and my ears felt like they were filling with fluid and all of my sinuses immediately began to pound. I was going to buy someone a gift in there but they didn't get it!

I take daily allergy meds, sometimes will get hives from shell fish or strawberries, not always though...and I love shrimp.

I take a daily allergy pill and flonase. Also sometimes use a nasal wash which helps. I'm not allergic to any food.

I had been taking over the counter allergy pills and my husband said I shouldn't be taking them every day and should go to the doctor. A couple of days after I stopped taking them I started to itch ALL over. It was torture. Went to the doctor and told him what happened. He said 'you mean you've been paying for those pills?!' No, no, no....I'll give you a prescription. Those are free.

Wow Ameriscot you are very sensitive. I'm usually not to products.

I know that building I work in has mold. I wonder if this has had something to do with it. I've unfortunately been there over 4 years. I hope to quit in the next few months. I need to get out of there for more reasons than one.

I think mine is not just allergies, it's also MCS - multiple chemical sensitivity.

Mold makes me cough. None of my allergy symptoms are sneezing.
