Diabetes and the total carnivore diet

A participant in my diabetes support group (72 yrs old) went on a diet like that. He lost 30 lbs. He went off the diet a few months later after his doctor threw a fit at his lab tests & asked, "What the hell are you doing?" His uric acid levels were dangerously high & his kidney function had dropped. His doctor also said "You won't be so happy about losing 30 lbs. if you get kidney stones....but you will learn a lot about pain."

A diet high in protein is especially hard on the kidneys which are forced to work harder to excrete the excess protein. A diabetics kidneys are already working harder to excrete the excess glucose. And, when we're older, our kidneys (like the rest of us) are tired & don't need extra burdens.

Yes I agree.

I don't know anything about eating a meat diet for type 2 diabetes, but I think Win has a point there, an all meat diet may be too high in protein and hard on your organs, which may already be compromised from the diabetes. Some say to cut back on meat. That's the problem with the internet, for every article touting something, you can find an article against it. I figure, like with a lot of things, moderation is best. I think an all meat diet would be harmful in the end, but some meat would be fine. I know, not much help. :)

I wasn't looking for help just posted an interesting article from Healthline. It has lots of information on the subject.

I knew one guy who ate the Atkins diet and was able to avoid needles for his diabetes. Atkins is mostly meat/protein but also has veggies. I don't know how he's doing these days, haven't seen him since mid 90's. I would assume that all that protein would be harmful to him, now in his 70's.

Dr Atkins died from brain injury after falling on an icy pavement. However....
A medical report issued by the New York medical examiner's office a year after his death showed that Atkins had a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. His widow refused to allow an autopsy.

The body can adapt to all sorts of things but it doesn't mean it is a healthy way to live.

Many, many years ago one diabetes treatment called the starvation diet consisted of an ounce of whiskey in a cup of black coffee every two hours from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily.

A balanced diet is the way to go and regular monitoring of your blood sugar, please make sure you stay in touch with your endocrinologist and a nutrition class is very important/beneficial as well. We have many diabetics in our family and have walked down that path successfully.

Yes. An autopsy with the results published would have hurt book sales.

He was also quite a liar. After one of his books was published, he was interviewed & asked about his health.
He said, "I'm in excellent health. All my lab tests are quite normal." (knowing, of course no one would have access to them)

My son-in-law and his brother-in-law did the Atkins diet for a while. They both lost a lot of weight. I told my SIL that it was not healthy, that all that animal fat would clog his arteries and damage his kidneys. He bragged that his doctor told him he was in excellent health and his arteries were just fine. His BIL stopped and then he eventually stopped it too, I don't know the reason why. They both promptly regained the weight.

This is Dr. Stillman's Quick Weight Loss Diet, published in the late '60's. Protein only, around 10 glasses of water a day. It guarantees 15% of your weight, if I remember correctly, off in a week, and like 10% or so for the next weeks. It does work, but I was in my teens back then.

I have been diabetic2 on Metformin since 2010. Not sure if the diabetes treatments are different or vary from the UK but Ive heard they do.

Low carb foods sugar free and less dairy products low alcohol intake and watch out for fruits high in natural sugar. I dont follow strict regimes and my weight is ok now and lost it without going on any diets. Attend check ups test blood sugars regularly watch ur cholesterol and blood pressure and if possible excercise.
