Did Guys Actually Carry Their Girlfriends' School Books?

Or was this simply some warm-and-fuzzy included in the plots of pre-1950 romantic comedies featuring someone like Mickey Rooney? "Say Maribelle, I think you're swell. Kin I be your fella?" Maribelle unloads her books into his waiting arms. It's curious that the guy never had his own books. I guess homework wasn't part of the guys' priorities in those flix.

On the other hand, this ritual of carrying missies' books was alluded to in songs as late as the early '60s, e.g., "Tra La La La Suzy," and even in Larry Williams' gritty 1958 rocker "Slow Down." So maybe it did happen.

Just that I never saw this in Realsville and was wondering if it was just myth

When I was aged 9, my then boyfriend was a real young gentleman. He lived close to the school but walked me nearly all the way home. He would help carry my bag if it was heavy, and on Friday, when he got his pocket money he would buy me sweets.

Actually, my male friends still offer to carry items they think might be too heavy for me. A couple of years ago, when I met up with my English pen pal in Ireland, he immediately offered to carry my suitcase and backpack even though he had ones of his own. I was quite touched by his manners as this was our first in-person meeting, and I had no idea what to expect. In general, it's been my experience that most men are quite the gentlemen when it comes to offering help. Once in awhile, I run across one who is not, but it could just be that I've been lucky???

Yes we did and still do.

It does feel a little odd when I wind up carrying her purse, but I do it anyway, especially when she is shopping or going to the Doctor. With luck I often find a chair where I can park while she is trying on a garment. When I look around there are often several other slightly sheepish looking guys sitting there with purses. While you are sitting there, you would be amazed at the number of women who step out of the dressing room and ask for an opinion on a garment.

Her favorite purse for traveling is pretty big, and we typically slip our water bottles into it for convenience. It would be pretty hard for me to not help her.

Now "some" women get an attitude if you hold the door open for them. what is that all about?

Mine always did and still does. I honestly don`t think he would have carried my purse back then but always offers to take it now. Doesn`t seem to bother him at all-he goes nuts cuz my purse is way too heavy on my shoulder. I don`t know why it is-nothing in there seems THAT heavy.

I always carried my girlfriends' books on the way to their houses, after school. It definitely paid off, once we got cozy. Man, I miss those days! :devilish:
