Did something happen to gas/oil overnight?

Gaer

"Angel whisperer"
When I went to gas up this morning, there was a long line of vehicles lined up at the station,
and down the block.
Many were filling multiple gas cans! I noticed the price here and surrounding towns
went up 30 cents per gallon from yesterday.
But, It looked like "panic buying". Did I miss something? Did something happen overnight?

That really does seem unusual but I don't find anything in the news about prices taking a sudden jump. Maybe it's a local issue. It seems too early for prices to rise for the July 4th holiday.

Don't know. We went to get some gas in the container for the lawnmower and there were signs of no gas on most pumps. Only one with regular and one with diesel (no other choices of octanes or the no-ethanol). Said something about supply problems. This is in Texas. We went to another station and it was full of choices. Oddly, same chain of stores.

I haven't heard anything... even though gas is up 30 cents a gallon, could that one station you saw maybe have offered it for a significantly lower price for part of a day or something? They do that around here sometimes and it always results in those lines.

It does seem to be a bit of a regional mystery. The Valero McKee Refinery, just north of Amarillo, slipped off line, and is currently starting back up. They may or may not be part of the issue, but I would suggest a twitter induced panic buy.

Our prices are up around 30 cents per gallon also.

Keep in mind the price of gas to day is based on the cost of production 2-3 months ago which could include the price of oil purchased 6 months ago. Real time price is a reflection of old information.

Yes, I know that. Thanks. My concern was not with the price of gas because I know
that won't change much until the pipelines open again and changes are made.
I was wondering why the long lines for gas and people filling gas cans, suddenly?
i thought something dramatic happened overnight of which I was unaware. (????????)

Are/were they planning rolling blackouts for what ever reason? Gas cans for generators?

Too early to blame July 4th, too late to blame Father's Day, so yeah, that is odd.

did your state have an adjustment in their gas tax that usually hits about now.?
i know my state keeps jacking up the state tax on gas.... i think trying to force drivers to buy electric or quit driving as much as possible

Ever have this happen to you? You're going to get groceries and you need gas but you wait until you're done shopping and the price at the pump went up 20 cents while you were at the store. Buying gas is like gambling...should I buy now or wait???
That's the truth. 🤨 It's a crapshoot. I've given up trying to figure it out and just get gas when I need it.

I'm with you! The only exception is, if I'm going anywhere I try to fill up several days in advance of a holiday. Prices always shoot up at holidays...July 4th is coming up!
