We have a small down comforter that was something my mother in law had many years ago. It is very good quality and really warm fluffy down, no feathers, etc. But it is old and threadbare, so we were taking it on camping trips to use in the camper for our dog on cold nights. He loved it and used to curl up and sink into it.
I would always wash it in the machine, cold water, delicate and give it a short run in the dryer on low to get out some of the water.....then line dry it. As it dried, I'd hold it and fluff it to keep the down from clumping and would hang it in different directions until dry. It usually took a few days, but I have the line set up in my basement laundry room, so no problem.
That was one of the last things I washed today, put it in the dryer and went down in a short amount of time to check on it, fluff it, and clear any down out of the filter, which is usually needed. Well, when I looked in there, it was like a big rats nest. A huge pile of down near the front of the dryer, some of the seams started to come apart finally because the fabric was so old and thin.
I carefully rolled up the comforter and put it in a large black trash bag, didn't bother drying it any further. It served us well, but was time to put it to rest, lol. Down was flying all over the floor, and I had to get the small vacuum and vacuum out my dryer, the filter, etc. It was nice and small, perfect size for our camper dog "bed", will have to find something similar to take its place.
Have you ever cleaned something, and had a big mess to clean up afterwards?
