Difficult to wake up

I go to bed and maybe about a half hour I go to sleep. Lately I've been waking up about a half-hour later, then can't go back to sleep right away - it takes at LEAST another hour - sometimes up to 3 hours. When I do, I usually sleep the rest of the night, but when I wake up, it's difficult for me to get going - I just feel so sleepy and I have a horrible taste in my mouth and I'm sure my breath reflects this.

Wondering what time you eat your evening meal? I’ve been told not to go to bed until at least 3 hours after eating ,I don’t have issues with reflux / indigestion, TBH I don't know why my GP even mentioned it, I’ve never been one to go to bed on a full stomach
We eat at 5 pm don’t go to bed till after 9.30 unless we are really tired 💤

I can relate, deb. I'm a lifelong insomniac. The only thing that's good, now, is that I can sleep in! When I was working, it was difficult. I tried sleeping pills about 3 times, but they did nothing at all for me. It's important you do not take naps through the day to make up for lost sleep at night..that's what I've been told by doctors.

Is this recent, or have you always had problems falling asleep?

If I wake up too early (after only a couple of hours) a couple of generic un-coated aspirin with half glass of water will send me right back to sleep to finish my night's rest unless I allow daytime problems to invade my brain in the interim.

I apparently have a cast iron stomach because I've done this for years and never had aspirin problems that others seem to have. I'm looking at 87 years in a few months so it can't have harmed me too much.

Ok, folks, I reckon I'm on the other side of the "sleepy lagoon" debate. I exercise each morning & walk 6 days/week. I take a real 2 hour "beauty rest" (some might say "ugly rest") every day about 3.30 pm. I sleep like a baby. At night I go to bed about 10:30 pm. I also sleep like a baby. Don't know why? Maybe it's because I don't watch violent movies or programs. Maybe it's because I don't have a "smartphone" so don't have to check anything every 2 minutes. Maybe it's because I love to read which relaxes me much? Sorry for ya all good folks who can't sleep. I suggest a glass of nice warm mild & maybe some sleepy classical music. By the way, I do not take any pills nor drugs to knock me out. That is bad medicine or so I have read. Maybe it's because I am just plain lucky? I really don't know but it's 3:30 pm & I am getting awful sleepy. Good night, sleep tight & don't let the bed bugs bite

Now I almost never take aspirin or any other kind of drug. But, when I was young I took aspirin and then would feel a burning sensation in my stomach. A co-worker told me never to take aspirin on an empty stomach, to always have it with at least some milk. He said that aspirin will latch on to the stomach wall and burrow in. That scared the hell out of me. If I were you I would be more careful since you're getting older and your stomach, like everything else, is getting weaker. 😻

I am pre-diabetic (The last two years my fasting blood glucose has been just below 120 in whatever units they use). I have an un-monitored diet which is high in carbs, which I desperately crave. Photos of a plate of spaghetti, a baked potato or an ice cream sundae make my mouth water. I wouldn't be surprised at anytime to be informed that I am a full-fledged diabetic - it runs in both sides of my family, too. I mentioned this to my gastroenterologist on my last visit 2 weeks ago. He didn't seem that concerned.

Also, the last few days I've woken up with paresthesia in my arms and legs - worse on the right side.

You definitely should have an A1C test, Deb. That paresthesia may be the beginning of peripheral neuropathy which you certainly don't want to mess around with. Are you thirsty when you wake up?

never been a god sleeper ' I do envy people who sleep well ' deb your sleeping pattern was the same as mine -
but I dont wake thirsty 'but dry throat sometimes .. keep away from asprins they are not the best tablet to take
only if prescribes in your meds .. dont go to bed to early also 'i wait till iam falling asleep ..

Deb, those are signs of full-blown diabetes. Please schedule with your doctor soon.

Called PCP. Closest appointment she had was May 14th. You will likely ask why the long wait. Probably because she has limited office hours (only open about 8 hours a week and sometimes takes weeks off at a time without notice) and she's the only MD in town, so has a large clientele.

I just broke out of an up all night cycle going to bed at 5-6 AM and waking at noon that lasted for a couple weeks and does tend to come and go. I tried to adjust by refusing to nap despite nodding off briefly every day. I started taking Melatonin a half-hour or so before "bedtime" and forcing myself in to the bedroom. It worked because my bed is extremely comfortable and I use a white noise machine and an air purifier. I won't say the air purifier helps but I awoke at 8:30 this morning and I am going to try to nap. If I do need to nap I will set my alarm on my phone so I wake up in fifteen minutes. Doesn't life offer enough challenges without depriving us of our sleep?
