Digital age

Modern technology in the digital age allows me to transport and listen to my iTunes music library from my iPhone while driving in my car using bluetooth. I can also listen to iTunes quietly using earbuds or from iPhone speakers.

With an Apple Music subscription I can download unlimited music albums and bands for my listening pleasure.

Sometimes Apple Music doesn't have exactly what I want such a live concert, so to remedy this I use media human mp3 video converter to convert YouTube videos to mp3 format. I find a lot of good music on YouTube that downloads directly to my music library.

Smaller is greater.

I have iTunes on my Mac but do not have Apple devices. I was using the now defunct Google Play which recently became You Tube Music. Some of the features of this new "upgrade" are annoying. But I do like that I can still listen to all my music on my computer, tablet or phone. I don't have a car so that's moot. I do not need to subscribe to YT Music. I uploaded most of the songs from my iTunes library as well as new songs I have access to.

Awhile back, my son told me about Clip Grab which is installed on my Mac. It copies and downloads YT videos onto the computer. I then drag them into my Google Photos where each one will play looped until I click on something else. I use this method to have access to some of the music in my album collection. For my 45s, I made playlists in my YT library. They of course, are also accessible on all my devices.

Most of the music I buy these days is just digital files. All of my CDs are ripped to mp3 files and all of my digital music is in my iTunes library. All of the music I have is rated (1 to 5 stars plus love or don't love), what I like (3 or more stars) is characterized and most of those I also have comments about the song.

I listen to new music streaming or downloading it and playing it on my iPhone or iPad. Sometimes I'll listening to things I don't have in a Spotify playlist of music I like but don't own but more often than not I'll listen to the music I like that I own.

In addition to all that I have a spreadsheet of most of the music I've listened to since 2006 with a grade (F-A+) and characteristics if it's a B+ or above.

Wow! Hats off to you, I’m not so meticulous. However, I download full albums or complete concerts. If I don’t particularly like a certain download I delete it from my collection. I have yet to listen to everything in my iTunes library.

I’m rediscovering music I didn’t have access to before. I’m amazed by what was missed and/or overlooked.
I love the sounds of Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed / Velvet Underground. I am partial above all other music to the blues.

Listening to George Thoragood & the Destroyers Lifts my spirits and makes me feel good.

I'm pretty sure I've got a minor obsessive compulsive personality disorder based on what I've read about it. We do those kinds of things.

I occasionally watch a Deconstructing the Beatles video where they somehow separated out the individual parts of Beatles songs. Those guys along with George Martin created magic. It's fascinating to listen to them, even after over 50 years. Individually, they all put out good music in their solo careers, but they never recreated that magic they had as a group. They were creative geniuses and were at the right place at the right time for everything to come together.

I agree the Beatles were/are still phenomenal. Imagine knowing what all their lyrics mean?

I'm sure that it becomes much more convenient to deal with many programs and digital technologies if you look for step-by-step instructions on the Internet. For example, I found here a fairly simple and understandable explanation of how to make an MP3 file (the usual extension for YouTube videos when downloading) a more suitable MP3 extension for a music player. That is, in fact, you can only get an audio file from any multimedia file. This helps a lot to save memory on different devices, especially if you, like me, don't like to add or remove music to your playlists often.

I did that within in my own collection in the last couple of days. I uploaded some songs to Apple Music (formerly iTunes) and YouTube Music that I'd forgotten about. When I went to Library>Songs and let them play from whatever letter I choose, songs will play that I haven't listened to in years. I was a little down yesterday and listening to the music really brought me out of it.

I use an online recorder to record (off You Tube) all of my music (for free) and then put them on a USB flash drive. I have over 800 songs recorded so far. What I don’t understand is that all the songs will not play in order. I have the flash drive formatted in FAT32 as stated in the vehicle manual. Any ideas?

Another question I have is can you play YT songs on an iPhone without first converting them to iTunes?

Just throwing this in for those of us that have a technology learning deficit. I just use a stereo in the house. Complete with tuner, casette, CD player and turn table. In the car, just the radio and CD player. I am a true dinosaur! LOL

I don't have a stereo, but I prefer listening to one because the music goes throughout the house (depending on how large the house is).

I know Alexa can do that with those little things placed around -- I have that stuff, but I hate to use it because I know Amazon is gathering information through their technology.

One day, without us saying the word "Alexa", the AI butted into the conversation about movies my friend and I were having, and suggested one. I unplugged the devices after that.

Twice in the past few weeks, my Kindles (all 3 are set on airplane mode) have updated themselves. I always make sure, every time I use a Kindle (which is often throughout the day), that it is still on airplane mode. Well, these two times, it wasn't. That really angers me because I am extremely meticulous about keeping Amazon off my Kindles. I put books on via USB. If I want to check to see if there is an upgrade, I empty my Kindles of everything, including in the files on my computer.

Trust me this thing goes throughout the house and I could make to go through the neighboorhood. It was my hubands baby. Goes back to the 80's with the huge speakers. A classic Technic system back in the day. He added the 8 CD player to it at some point.

I'm pretty well 'old school' here. I have a decent hi-fi set up at home (Technics tuner/amp/CD separates ) B&W speakers and a Sony direct drive turntable for my vinyl. I have one of these 'Alexa' things still in its box and unused. Bluetooth sounds like a gum disease. I don't have anything fancy in the car - just a DAB tuner with USB ports. If there was much else, I'd disable it.

I’m a renegade, too. I’m learning to fix old Walkman-style radio-cassette players; they, like cassettes themselves, can be bought cheaply off of eBay. The radios almost always still work, and can deliver good sound; cassette belts, often the cause of dysfunction, are replaceable. Guess I’m an antique collector/restorer now. Sweet 1980’s, I’m coming back to you! 😸

Yes, WheatenLover, you got it right. Pretty soon Amazon, Google and your government will know every step you take everyday. The freedoms our ancestors knew will be a thing of the past. The sad thing most people don't care and that is the problem. Perhaps it really doesn't matter as more and more of us will be programed to be mindless worker bees that must consume the latest and the "greatest" new technology out there.

I agree. My kids use their cell phones and computers without much regard for security. The boys use Ubuntu, as do I. How hard is to to install and use BleachBit and Sweeper? Not hard at all. Of course, there are many programs available for Windows - but my daughter and husband won't use. I downloaded many onto my husband's computer, and I run them from time to time.

I hate having my privacy invaded, and my data collected, and I do what I can to avoid it. Richard Stallman is working on a project, trying to figure out how to avoid this problem, and there is a subreddit called r/StillmanWasRight, where is is discussed. I'm going to check it out since I use Ubuntu.
