DNA kits

Hubby and I are considering sending away for the Ancestry.com DNA kits.. Hubby's mom always claimed to be 50% Native American.. however, many of her claims have proven to be suspect. So we are curious. I expect my results to be very boring with 100% eastern European results. Has anyone sent away for your DNA results? Were you surprised? Would you like to send for one? If not.. why not? Are they bogus? Just want opinions.

Some of my male relatives might have slipped into a teepee or two according to a niece who has spent the time and money to check us out. She even paid for my test...

I've done one of those, and so have members of my family. I don't have a lot of faith in their accuracy. All they really do is make educated guesses. And they can't break down Great Britain into Scottish, English, Welsh, etc etc. Results were just too general for me. Western European? Really, what does that mean?

Might show Native American though, so I'd still go for it.

I might try it someday. I'm a Heinz 57 variety, and would like to know the truth.

I'm also a mutt. I know for a fact I've got Irish, English, and German roots. We expect we have Welsh ones as well due to our surname. Possibly some Scottish.

Can't find my DNA report but it said Norwegian as well. Oh yes, and all reports say Neanderthal.

I saw that commercial with the guy who always though he was German.. and even wore lederhosen and danced German dances... Then found out he was Scottish.. so he bought a kilt.. I don't know if that's true.. seems very specific.

There is also a test called 23 and Me. I think this one gets more into the medical and genetic predispositions. I'd like that too.

They aren't that specific that they'd have Scottish instead of GB.

My family did the Ancestry one and I did the 23 and me. 23 and me got in trouble for their health predictions which were a crock. Mine certainly were. I'd go with Ancestry.

I don't think I'd ever do it. I have relatives in Ireland but to them I'm American ;) I really am American no matter what's running through my veins.

My Dad traced our family tree the old fashioned snail way many years ago. No big surprises there. The first origins were Berwick Upon Tweed UK. A pawful were from Germany. One of two came over on the Mayflower. I've always been mistaken for Irish so that resolves things.

I don't think the DNA tests are worthwhile. It's like the ones for dogs. So they could tell me Sophie is 40% Boxer, 30% Staffordshire, 20% German Shepherd and 10% Unknown. I can see all that, I don't need a test. Or what if they are way off? How about if they tested Callie and reported him as a mix of English Bull, Elk Hound and Bichon Frise?

I dd the FTDNA kit about a year ago, have 97% European(British Isles+France+Switzerland+Germany) and 4% Middle Eastern(Egypt,Jordan,Syria,Iraq).

Hmmm, 97+4=101....so there, 101% of my DNA accounted for.

I recently ordered an FTDNA kit for my wife, she received-swabbed-returned the kit, awaiting the results. Her family has always operated on the belief that there is some Algonquian native blood in their lineage.

I think I can perform one of those DNA tests right now, without all that blood stuff. Let's see, you're a white American. You are 76% European, 18% Mediterranean, 2% Native American , 4% unknown.
Hey, Ameriscot, did I come close?
I know it costs a hell of a lot more, but would it be better to have a genealogist do your family tree?

No Native American, no Mediterranean. I've done a lot of research on my own but have come up against several walls. Also have some ancestors that I can't trace their country of origin.

Three generations ago, I was French-Canadian. Intermarriage with Native Canadians wasn't such a big deal as it was in the USA. I'd like to find out, but I don't know if those test sites were more hype than fact.

Did 23andme about a year ago. I had a grandmother who claimed to be 1/4th native American. Nope. All Northern European (UK/German/Finn) except for 2.7% Neanderthal. I'm the whitest guy I know. Which explains why I can't jump or dance.

My family has done extensive research on both sides.. My mom's and my Dad's.. Never turned up anything but German. One unknown is that my great grandfather on my mom's side was adopted in Germany right at the French border. His background was unknown.. so perhaps I do have something other than German in my DNA... FRENCH!! Ooooh la LA! That would make sense then... hahahahahaha

When my kids were in college and there was a scholarship for anyone with native america blood we thought about having a DNA done. But is was too expensive. Now that it is affordable I do not care what I am made of! he he

My aunt from SC once told me: "you nevah know what you'll find hangin' in your family tree..."

Made me think...

Well... I hope I find something really exotic... I would love to know I had something other than white bread in my DNA... Maybe a little wheat or rye would be nice.

I know where my mothers' side came from. I have a copy of a ships manifest from 1903 listing my great grandparents and the children they brought to this country--one was my grandfather. They were from Poland but the ship left from Liverpool. My grandmother was born here but also Polish. My dads past is not as clear but the name was English. His mother, a red-head thought to be Scotch-Irish which I guess, Irish. (Not clear on that) They were both born here as far as I know.
