Do hospitals or doctors routinely ask the patient or those answering for them about depression?

Hospital called me in regards to an incapacitated family member. Aware but can't answer questions in part to trach and/or tubes in mouth. They asked Are they being or ever have been treated for depression? They asked about drug and alcohol use and a few other questions. But not physical medical history. But the depression and substance use questions were at the top of their list. I've helped admit senior parents over the last 10 years and don't remember that question.

It was mentioned to staff that they do consume, alot sometimes. They were also asked where are they and when/date questions for several weeks.

Is this routine or they think there is something else going on. They did say the patient didn't make sense during admission
