Do you ever feel that everything is part of a trend?

Title. And maybe you don't know who started it, where it's going, and what its true objective is? I do feel this more in recent years than I did when I was much younger although there were plenty of trends then too if I had been wise enough to see them.

Are you referring to anything specific, or just a general question?

Oh yes without a shadow of a doubt. This is what irritates me very much in that.. some faceless , chinless wonder..might even be a 12 year old.. sitting behind a keyboard may well start something that immediately many people follow, and before we know it we've got trends, and even laws being changed to accommodate those 'trends''...

No, At least I don't bite. People in power or who have access to affecting the mindset of others
TRY to persuade your opinions. They might think their words are leading us, but I think people
have their own capabilities to reason for themselves.
Only when things we want are "taken off the market" to introduce something they think is better
for us, do we have no choice.

Oh I know where it comes from, my wife hatched this plot when we got married, keep me working til I croke and she gets paid....[psssssssssssss ova here, the joke's on her...ain't no money, hehehehehehehe!!!]

@chic, I'm not sure if this falls under the topic to which you refer, but my beef recently is with WAY overused "buzz words," such as 'mindfulness', 'sustainable', 'intentional' etc. I have no problem with these ideas in and of themselves, it's how they are used *so* much and in such a huge variety of contexts (I guess to attempt to give weight to the subject about which the person is speaking) that they just tend to lose their meaning.

You mean like Oceanian Newspeak?

Trends exist to sell new things. And once the market is saturated, a new trend must take place. Very ridiculous I think.

The latest thing in trends are all the YouTube videos showing you how to have the latest clothes, hair, cabinets, furniture, etc. These videos are just to gain subscriptions, likes, and ultimately more traffic so the ads that Google places will earn them a bit more.

I didn't know what that was ... I will look it up-- ok, so now we know I haven't read "1984" haha. Reading over the Google entries, I don't think that's exactly what I was aiming for. But there is a certain amount of "herding of the mind" going on, for sure

There is that of course but trends have existed for a lot longer than the 20th & 21st centuries, like the age of Empire and the age of social consciousness.

When I was young young people became anti establishment. They grew their hair long, lived in communes, tried to grow their own food, wrote poetry and sang songs about peace and love, protested war, fought for equal rights, used words like "groovy" and became so powerful Madison Avenue became concerned about how to appeal to them. By the 1980's someone flipped a switch and the world became greedy and hyper establishment and this became the new trend. And it goes on and on.
