Do You Find That Yawns Are Contagious?

I do, can't even see my pets yawn without yawning myself.

I read somewhere that the great apes approach each other with widely open mouths to indicate not, not as you would think, hostility but good will. The theory is that *if* we are descended from the apes, it could be a genetic memory to greet a gaping mouth with another gaping mouth to show friendliness.

As good a theory as any other, I guess.

I was told that if a puppy is too excited to relax for bedtime, you should just take a deep breath and yawn and that would help to calm him. Tried it with my pup a couple of times and it did seem to help.

Some horse trainers say that if you want your horse to relax, you should give a deep sigh. Then when the horse sighs too you know he has taken your cue and relaxed. (Since he can't see you yawn, and horses don't yawn for the same reason mouth-breathing mammals do.)

I think I will try the yawning at bedtime thing with my older kitty, SeaBreeze. She sometimes get hyper late at night!

Weird Pappy, but I just actually yawned after reading your post. Doesn't take much for me these days.

Back in the late 1950's there was a movie "Tom Thumb". There is a Yawn Song in it. My sister took me to see it when she was angry at her hubby so we stayed through two showings of it. Almost got kicked out for giggles during the second showing because we were watching everyone yawn. LOL!

When I fly and my ears block I make myself yawn to help unblock them. I close my eyes, breath deeply for about a minute and that usually makes me yawn.
