Do you have a spoiled pooch?

Sea, My stepfather trained dogs for the government. Everything from guard dogs, drug dogs, bomb dogs, and search and retrieval dogs. He told me to talk to the dogs as I were a strict disciplinarian, and to love and praise them when they deserved it, just as I would any of my children. It has always worked for me. I use to watch the Dog Whisperer too, until we change cable companies.
 
Just for fun, I tried some of her techniques on the dogs at the vineyard. They would often rush up to greet me when I came home and instead of immediately giving them love and attention, followed her advice to ignore them for a few minutes as the alphas do upon returning to the pack. It made a big difference calling them to me for attention on my terms rather than being pounced upon.

She also advises to let them see you eat something like an apple or cookie while ignoring them just before their meal time. Then, give them their food and walk away. This kind of treatment is what dogs expect as pack members and it make them much more relaxed and secure.

After my orders to language school were lost in boot camp, it looked like I might end up military police. Thought if that were the case, hoped I would get dogs. Later, realized they probably treat you like a dog in the training and that would't have been any fun...
 
My Michael was in the Marines, so I thought he would to the disciplinarian in our family. NOPE, that turned out to be me. It is funny, with the kids he just disappeared until all was well. With the dogs or cats, Michael will actually try to cover for them, or try to fix their messes before I see them. But in all else he's all Marine. :gettowork:
