Alright, this is another one of my threads that's totally forgettable but gives me a chance to vent! I am a voracious reader and have always shunned books that are written in first person, present! I hate them, it just doesn't seem natural. "I stand at the door and wait" and my mind screams, it should be "I stood at the door and waited!!!!" Today I am forcing myself to read a book like that because I am interested in the subject matter and am constantly translating it in my mind! Told you it is a petty dislike, feel free to share yours, if it isn't too personal for you! Or resent me for wasting your time! :)

It seems that everyone on tv, radio, podcast tells a story in the present tense. Drives me crazy. Somewhere I heard that it’s correct. I don’t know why it is other than everyone seems to do it.

I know those ‘entitled’ people too.

I have to agree with you there. First person is fine, but in present tense? My mind is like, "Really? This is happening right this minute, as you write this?" I guess it's supposed to be like you're in their brain through the whole book. And I guess that's why it doesn't feel natural.

Yes, all that first person present bothers me and I think the people on the radio bother me most because they add a lot of those random so's, which are my current pet peeves.
Interviewer: Tell us about your experience Mr. Jones, were you frightened?
Mr. Jones: So, I'm standing on the edge of the cliff....
 
Having a bit of OCD, I sometimes find myself bothered by petty things. I don’t mind first person narration as long as it stays first person narration. A book or articles that switch types of narration, annoys me somewhat.

I’ve got other petty dislikes but I try and either ignore them or reframe them so they are more acceptable to my way of thinking. It’s challenging at times.

@Della Did you ever notice how many answers now start with "So?"

Also starting sentences with “And”, “But”, “Like”, and “Um”. Overuse of the words “Amazing”, “Literally”, and ”Weird”. I think it is generational, although I know one Boomer woman that does it because she wants to appear young and cool. It comes off the opposite!

Why would using the words amazing, literally and weird be considered a generational thing?

Note she said 'overuse', which of course is subjective. What qualifies as overuse? 1-3 times in a short conversation? In every other sentence?

Think back to our youth when if someone couldn't think of anything substantive to reply to something you said they'd say 'Cool'. IMO both amazing and weird are highly subjective. One person's perception of either is not necessarily everyone's. The weird especially, is often someone else's normal.

Not sure how 'petty' this is but i am so sick of Articles (that show up on my browser 'news'feed) YouTube Vids and TikToks that mis-titled. i can cut people slack for thinking some things weird or creepy that are 'normal' for me, but when they label things scary or creepy and you can see right thru how it was faked?
But the bigger gripe is with supposed science articles and videos that use unnecessarily sensational titles. Particularly if they're talking about something that any science nerd knows is long-standing info. Saw one last week that made it seem the molten part of Earth's innards were a brand new (and very 'scary' discovery) i learned about that as a child and where do they think that fiery fluid Volcanoes spew is?

I am sick of videos on YouTube that are disrupted by commercials! I am willing to put up with them at the beginning but get outraged when they show up in the middle of something I am watching! Last Christmas Haendel's Messiah, of all things, was ruined for me because of that!
