There are times when I have a week or two worth of menus in mind, and shop with that as my guideline, though I pick up certain things that are on sale or special, that will keep or that I can freeze. I feel very virtuous during those periods.
And then there are times, like today, when I'm rushing to get out the door and remember that I have no clue what we're going to have for dinner. I dive into our little freezer, search for something interesting or something that isn't too similar to what we had yesterday, and pull it out, hopefully in time for it to defrost before I'm ready to cook it. And then when I get home and I'm ready to cook, I'm also searching in the fridge or on the pantry shelves looking for accompaniments to the meat, fish or poultry I chose to defrost, making up the meal in my head as I go. Those times I don't feel so virtuous!

What about you?
