I just read a lovely story about a bride who is about to be married in the wedding dress that was made in 1895 for her Great great Grandmother ...amazingly the dress lay in storage for 50 years because grandmas' daughter preferred to wear something more modern in the 1920's, but Grandmas great grandaughter wore the dress in 1946, and ever since other family members have fallen in love with it and worn it at their own weddings...this new bride to be will be number 11 in the family to wear that beautiful dress. I wonder what great grandma would have thought way back in 1895 if she'd been told her dress would still be celebrated in the years 2015...wow!!

Look at the pictures and history of the dress here...

Beautiful story and lovely dress! There's no clothing from the past but there is a story about earrings. My grandmother had pierced ears. That was unusual at the turn of the century in a small town. She always wore diamond studs. She passed on in 1962 and the diamonds disappeared. In 1972 my grandfather was getting on in years and my parents sold his house. First it had to be cleaned. He hadn't really gotten rid of much since my grandmother had died. They had to go in there with black bags and start tossing. I remember sitting on the edge of the bathtub as my Mum emptied the walk-in bathroom closet. Every prescription, potion and powder from decades before.

There was one prescription bottle that fell to the floor. My Mum picked it up and just before it went in the trash she noticed something curious. It had tissue paper instead of pills inside. She opened it and out fell the diamond earrings. My Mum was always too afraid to pierce her ears so she had the diamonds reset into her engagement ring. When I graduated from high school she had them remade into earrings for me. Then a few years ago I passed the same earrings to my niece who wore them on her wedding day. I included the story of how they were lost and found. She's due to have a little girl soon. I know the earrings will have life with future generations.

I had my grandmother's engagement ring resized and gave it to my niece. It was a tiny little silver ring with a diamond the size of a atom. My niece is the only one in the family that can wear silver, so she was the logical one to have it.

Oh what a great story fur....and there's no doubt your grandmother would be delighted to know her precious ''rare' earrings were being loved all these years later!

Holly, no I don't but the story you posted was amazing!
I did immediately think the dress just had to be re-built since each generation seems to get a bit larger than the last, but over-all, they kept pretty much to the original sense of the design. I loved the photos! I'll be re-visiting this one, thanks.

Furry, I loved your post about the earrings, too. Your mother must have been so amazed at finding those diamond studs! Good thing the bottle fell or they would never have been found. I hope each generation keeps them and passes them on. Thanks for sharing.

My wife wants her wedding rings to be handed down to her favorite Grand Daughter..The rings are 52 years old right now..

My parents were very practical, married at a justice of the peace, and, instead of a wedding dress and tux, they had matching suits made. I thought that was a pretty cool.

Still have my mother's wedding suit. Style came back around briefly sometime in the 70's and I wore it a few times. Not old like the dress in the link though, only 1945.

Now, would anybody like to get married in my old Teddy Boy suit?

The brothel creepers will need a bit of a clean, but the drape, drainpipes and bootlace tie are as good as new.

:playful:
