Do you prefer male authors or female authors

I guess I'm an outlier but, despite being a woman, I find books by male authors much more interesting than those written by women. Women's fiction seem to dwell on romance, babies, fashion and cooking and other domestic matters. Any other outliers out there?

I prefer both authors depending on the type of book I’m reading. Steven King, Sidney Sheldon, Ken Follett, Nicholas Sparks, John Grisham, Dan Brown are some great male writers,

Women generally are better romance writers or authors . Nora Robert’s, Margaret Atwood, Daniel Steele are some popular romance authors but not all women want to read romantic novels. It’s the same with movies. Not all woman like Hallmark type movies either.

I liked Sidney Sheldon and devoured his books when I was younger, as well as Stephen King, Dan Brown, John Griisham and Ken Follet. Stephen has lost something though since he made the switch from supernatural horror to straight mystery. I loved his earlier work. Nicholas Sparks dwells a little too much on romance for me.

I never even thought about it. Let's see, who have I enjoyed reading over the years. Hmmm. William Shakespeare, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle, Dean Koontz, John Saul, Clive Cussler, oh and also Patricia Cornwell.

In fact most authors of the books (fiction and non fiction) I read are male. A reason, as already stated by PeppermintPatty, is that I don't read many romantic novels. Nevertheless as I was younger I even read two books of Jaqueline Susann ("Valley of the Dolls" and "The Love Maschine") and of course I always read books of famous authors as the Bronte sisters or Jane Austen. I also like Lillian Hellman's plays for example.

Male !!...I think my mind works in a more Masculine way so I can understand the way they're written more than I can a female... however I was and still am a fan of Agatha Christie.

I detest chic-lit... romantic fiction et al... can't stand it...

No I like both and I never read romance nowadays. But there are some fantastic murder mystery female authors like Louise Penny, Ann Cleeves, Anne Perry (British author) whom I just found out recently committed a horrific murder with another girl in her teens.

I've read good stuff from both. Maybe I like a good woman author a bit more to get insight into the other sex? Some good novelists: Ursula McGuin, Anne Tyler, Elizabeth Strout and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. But there are great male authors too: John Irving, Amitav Ghosh, Abraham Verges, Tom Robbins and Robert Graves.

This is a really interesting question because I have a long-time friend (a former girlfriend, actually) who writes...or, used to write. She had 3 novels published (decades ago) under her pseudonym...a man's name. And she chose a man's name specifically because she knew (she said) that her books would sell better if everyone thought she was a male author.

Honestly, I think she was right.

(her genres were adventure and crime, and if I recall, only 1 of them had a little bit of romance in the subplot)

For me it depends on the kind of book. Non-fiction as long as it is either the person's own experiences or accurate historical or scientific info it really doesn't matter.

For a different perspective on female subject matter in fiction i would recommend Margaret Atwood, Ursula LeGuin, Kate Wilhelm for starters.

I read a lot from both sexes. Female authors are more honest and open about feelings
And intimacy which is refreshing and I like it. Men are usually more into adventure stories
Philip Roth and Alberto Moravia (Italian). are exceptions

I read both. But in order for me to read it in the first place they must be able to write. Sometimes I will read an author simply because I know their subject will be fascinating. . These days I read a lot of nonfiction.

The last three books I have read are female authors, but otherwise I enjoy both.
