Do you remember these dances

The Twist, the jerk, the cool jerk, the monkey, the shing-a-ling, the pony, the boogaloo, the strole, the slow drag, the peppermint twist, the mashed potatoes, any others?
I remember the names. We all did the jitterbug or swing dancing before The Twist came out in '59. But tiring of that, I went back to the swing dancing. Come to think of it, The Twist may have been the fist dance where couples didn't hold on to each other...:(

I remember all the ones you mentioned Zardoz as well as most of the others that were mentioned in the replies. I never heard of The Gravy @bobcat or the Rock Lobster @outlander. Currently at gatherings the Cha Cha Slide and Electric Slide are popular line dances.

And lets not forget the Salsa. 💃🕺

Some of those mentioned I remember as just songs. I don't remember doing anything special on the dance floor with them. A few would stop the whole dance floor in its tracks and demand that you do the dance. And everyone would. The Twist was a bit different. I remember a time when no matter what was being played, you did the twist, all night long, nothing else.

We were forced to dance in grammar school, which I found humiliating and sissyish. Since then, I’ve only danced once, when I was inebriated in a nightclub in Amsterdam and a big Dutch girl pulled me to my feet and forced me to dance with her. That was in 1961.

Here's The Gravy. It was just a spinoff from the Mashed Potato hit by Dee Dee Sharp.
