Do You Still Have To Deal With Parking Meters ??

Saw a picture of a parking meter online this evening and realized that I can't remember the last time I actually had to use one.

Here, there are no meters anywhere. Downtown parking is free ... and I wonder why meters went away.
Only thing I can figure is that with so much business going out to the suburbs, free parking is an enticement to shop downtown maybe šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
OR maybe it cost more these days to maintain, replace, monitor, service the meters than they are worth. Dunno

I'm sure for whatever reason, the city bean counters said it would be better to simply remove them at some point.
But it could have been a push from business leaders I suppose.

Rarely.

I don’t have much reason to go into center city where the majority of meters are located.

I don’t have a problem with them, I keep a plastic pill bottle in the glove box that holds about $10.00 worth of quarters for meters.

I’ve never used the more advanced options, often times the meters have been vandalized and the coin option is the only one that works.

Our meters are free on Sundays and federal holidays.

We have those meters that issue a ticket with a time limit. It's a communal machine, usually sited in a prominent area. You can buy a ticket by paying with card, cash or gizmo. The ticket issued has to be left displayed prominently. A warden keeps tabs on all cars, any expired or no ticket quickly get another, and it's quite an expensive fine.

No, more like medical clinics, employees in stores and banks, insurance agents. Restaurants are busy too.
So where do these workers park if they don't use metered parking ??
Or maybe most use public transportation to and from work ??

In a former city where I grew up, my grandmother worked downtown on the 4th floor of a 5 story department store built around the turn of the last century. She must have mostly used metered parking when at work. I remember going to the department store at times and she would send me down to put coins in the meter ... pennies, a nickel? ... can't remember.

Then the department store moved into the mall that was built out on the edge of town. Free parking as far "as the eye could see". But the store wasn't the same and sadly my grandmother didn't like the new store in the mall and struggled to adapt. She soon retired.

Some almost 60yrs later and that old 5 story building is still standing vacant in the downtown there. I miss the old days when that downtown was a thriving business district, where families spent the day shopping up and down the streets, greeting everyone, or paused to catch a movie at the theater.

That beast looks complicated HC !!! ... think I'd have to attend a course on how to play that game

We still have a few of them downtown. I know there is some in front of our City Hall/Hall of Records and on a few side streets that are still in use. But, on the north side of town , where all the new development is happening, there are none....just huge parking lots.
