Do you use a emergency lockbox on your residence?

Hello all!
I am contemplating purchasing a lockbox for my home. I like the idea of having a key available for urgent entry, firefighters, ems, police, etc. Does anyone know of a lockbox made for this purpose? I have looked into Knox but they are pricey and to honest, kind of ugly.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!:)

Hi Mike,
The only kind of lockbox I know of is the kind that realtors hang on a doorknob so that other realtors can show a home when it is for sale. My suggestion would be to call your local fire chief and ask him or her. Good luck and let us know what you find out. It sounds like a good idea, something that I personally have never thought of.

We have that service here where I live and they are not like the realtors use. The ones our fire department use mount on the outside near the entry and on the wall.
We pay a onetime installation fee of $50. I paid the fee and the box will be installed in a few days.

There is another nice thing about apartment living.........have an office/staff for entry and if office is closed, either Security or Maintenance will let someone in.

I have a lockbox on the door of the house I am selling in Western Illinois.. We cannot be there so it's the only way the Realtors can come in to show the place. No problem so far.

My front door can just be pushed in with very little trouble. My dog keeps locking me out (by jumping up and scrabbling at the doorknob). I keep esplainin to him that *I* am the one with opposable thumbs thus the only one who can get his supper and he would do well to stop locking me out. But the key is on a lanyard hanging carelessly on the back post of a bench. :) I don't worry so much about rescue people getting in as I worry about them not understanding that the dogs are extreeeemely friendly and not vicious as their barking might indicate. I wouldn't want some overzealous policeman to shoot them.

I'd be worried about leaving a key outside -- couldn't someone just bash the box open or use bolt cutters or something (I don't trust my fellow man so much)?? My trusted neighbor of 40 years has a key, and so do my son and DIL.

I'm sure with enough effort someone could probably break the box open. My thinking is that if someone was that determined to gain entry they would just go to the rear of my house and break a window or kick the door in. I think like most locks, they are only a deterrent and help to keep honest people honest.

Hello Dr. Porter,
Thank you for your advice, I did contact the fire department. They have a commercial unit (Knox Box) for commercial use but informed me that if I wish to put a lockbox on my home they would store the combination for me and suggested I purchase one that is attached permanently rather than one that hangs from the door knob.

You got that right Mike. Anything can be entered with enough determination. The idea is these boxes are mounted at the front door area so it inhibits easy tampering with them.
