Do you use a shopping trolley ?

A lot of my friends have started using shopping trolleys, after seeing one at sale price I thought I’d buy it ‘for the future’ but have started using it for tins and heavy shopping, as I don’t drive, it makes a huge difference (although I wouldn’t take it to town)...

They were all the rage when I was a kid, everybody's mother had one because so many mothers didn't drive and would walk to the shops. My mum had one...

In Spain everyone has one in the villages where both my daughter and I have homes...everyone still goes to the village street markets for their fresh fish, meat and veggies.. and I have one there too

Since I now have lower back problems, I thought it would be a good idea for me to get one ( even tho' they're not fashionable here in England any more ..altho' starting to become so since the charge on carrier bags) )... and bought one for myself to use here totally forgetting of course that I have to drive to the supermarket..and using a shopping trolley would necessitate me having to lift the whole very heavy thing when it's full into my car.... oops schoolboy error... too difficult. So , now it languishes in the shed unused.

In a few days I'll be back in Spain and the shopping trolley there will be in use again... :D

I don't have a car and I only live only a few minutes walk away from a supermarket so yes, I do have a trolley and use it for tins and bulky shopping. I got mine from a charity shop several years ago and it's larger than the usual ones so it holds a fair bit. Never take it to town though.

Shopping trolleys are very popular where I live, anytime you get on a bus here there are always one or two women with their trolleys maybe more if it is an early morning bus to the supermarket..............to be honest I haven't yet got on a bus and not seen at least one trolley and I live in England.

I think they would be very handy if you had to get on buses with your shopping.... they'd be easy to roll on and off....

I never use buses ..except occasionally abroad :)

Very nice looking!

The ones that I see in my area look similar to these.

I don't use one mainly because I live in a third floor walk up and can't imagine bumping it up all of those stairs.

I also see some people in the area using recycled rolling suitcases to carry groceries, laundry, etc...

What I have for weekly trips to the grocery store. Love the ease of use, in and out of car, and up to my 3rd floor apartment. Folds up like an umbrella.

Bonnie how do you lift a full heavyweight trolley in and out of the car? I can't do it with lower back problems

I don't open the cart until I get back to my apartment Holly. I set the cart beside the car and put the grocery bags in the cart then. (No lifting of the cart full) . .. and then I walk it to the elevator.

They make stair crawler carts for going up stairs. I did buy one a while back for emergencies, when the elevator (power) goes out. Luckily haven't used it yet.
It's like yours Wren, with stair climbing wheels ... like this:

My mother got a wooden one in 1941. She never learned how to drive and gas was rationed. My father did not put the car on the road in 1943 because gas was so restricted.

Wow, I’ve not seen that before Bonnie, what a great idea !

Nope. here in the USA, we use a shopping cart. Others use a "shopping trolley". Way back when I lived in NYC, all God's chillen had a shopping cart. It also doubled as a laundry cart, too. Since a lot of people live in the suburbs, in cities, people actually walk to the grocery store, so you need a cart/tolley to haul your goodies back home.

they serve the purpose.. but I dont at the moment 'but maybe later down the line I will. as I hate carrying bags !!!!!!!!!!

I don't have a car and get sick on buses, so I have to walk quite a distance when I go shopping. I couldn't manage without my shopping trolley.

As HollyDolly said, they were popular when I was young, although my mother stuck to the good old shopping bag and would go to the shops most days. I still see a few being used, generally by older ladies. Bus services have been cut back here, but we do have a bus once a week from virtually outside my door to one one of the bigger local towns which has large supermarkets. Many of the ladies who use that bus have shopping trolleys, and the bus driver helps them lift it on and off.

For me and my wife walking is rather difficult. We would be lost without the car. She no longer drives, so my job title is chauffeur.

The bus doesn't go where we need to go.

My mother had one similar to that when I was a kid. She didn't drive and we did live on the third floor, so as soon as I was old and strong enough, I often took over for her on the stairs. I don't use one now because I have a car, but would definitely buy one if I had to walk to the nearest supermarket.

This thread reminded me of Clara Cannucciari's advice about saving money and staying trim: "Walk when you go to the grocery store. Because if you don't have a large car trunk to store things, you'll be forced to buy only what you can comfortably carry, which is most likely all you need."

My moma has one but she used it to get her groceries from the car to the house..back when she was driving..

Now I am the trolley....
