Do you use car rental services?

I have had to hire one today because mine broke down yesterday.
A day before I am going on a 11 day holiday.
What a dog's breakfast it is navigating these sites.
Trying to find a deal that is acceptable takes quite a while. Not willing to give these people any amount they ask for.
Choosing Ace Car Rentals, at $31.50 a day, together with ad-ons, the total is $394.50.
Ad ons included - Registration Recovery Fees: $3/day = $33, admin fees - $15.

Onerous identification documents required.
100 point ID check - Drivers License + Utility bill no more than 3 months old.
2 proof of address documents.
$700 security bond

I came across a site that stipulated in the term and conditions - any damage to windscreen will incur a $5000 charge. Vehicle not returned with same amount of fuel - a charge of $25 + fuel at $3.50/litre.

You can add a rental to your own car insurance for no ..or very little cost.. you don't have to accept the Rental company insurance..

Same with the windscreen.. call your insurance company and ask if they'll cover the windscreen... Any rental company that makes a charge of $5000 for windscreen damage needs to be given a very wide Berth...

Often, and have found by shopping around bargains can be had. If you have them consider a car rental by owner deal, that can be even cheaper. https://turo.com/ is a big one in the US and I see they now list cars in Australia as well. You may be able to find something better.

Beware the add-ons, that is where most rental car companies make much of their money. Don't take anything thing you don't absolutely need.

In the US our credit cards can often provide insurance on rental cars, you might check to see if yours does.

And return your call full of gas, its always very expensive not to.

When I pick up the vehicle I will ring my insurance company.
I have not renting from the company with a $5000 windscreen damage bill.

Very common for a high deposit to be asked.. here and in Spain it's £500.. or 500 euros most places.. you don't need to give them the money.. up front ...just give them your card details. As long as the car is returned in the same condition it went out, your card is safe. Remember to take pictures when you collect the car and when you return it..

well they won't let you take the car without agreeing to the Isurance payment so you'll have to call your Insurance company when you get to the rental company and know the registration details.. but before you sign the rental agreement

I belong to Enterprise Rentals. I just make a reservation using my club number, arrive at the airport, go to the car of my choice and drive off. No waste of time filling out for forms because it’s all done when I joined the rental club. I’m in and out in less than 5 minutes.

Enterprise also owns National and Alamo, so I can use any of these companies. No hassles.

I use Enterprise as well.
No surprises, good prices, pick of cars.
Your existing car insurance should insure you as part of your current contract.
Use a credit card and you have more protections.
Sure, its going to cost you.
