Do you use self check-out at supermarket?

Why or why not?

I usually go thru the regular lane because I buy a lot of produce, but if I have a couple items I use the "Uscan".

Never! It's my little rebellion against an evolving system that works against all humanity and our struggle for survival. One more job that a person with needs and family, will not be doing. What will we do with 9+ billion people on the earth and an automated system that has no need of the masses? And it's purpose only to enrich the ones at the top while we struggle for existence.

I agree with you Debby!
People want leaders to create jobs, then employers try to eliminate them! *sigh*

I have used it early in the morning when they have it more because I had no choice. I prefer to have a real cashier.

Agree. I figure they have the labor already priced into the product, so I'm going to let them earn it by checking me out.

You can't be OCD and use one. I keep rearranging the products in the bag after scanning causing an error, so I have to have the clerk correct it anyway. It's easier for me to go through the human line. It's like a smart phone I think I'm too stupid to use one. I self destruct at a fast food squawk box. It's always a mystery what I'll end up with.

I stuck it out as long as possible and still 99% of the time I will stand in line where there's a cashier rather than use the self scan tills...for the very reason stated already..prices include the cost of wages so we're already paying for someone to put the stuff through for us..and equally if we do it ourselves, then more and more people are put out of work...so for years I wouldn't go near a self scanner and waited patiently and sometimes impatiently in a long queue at a manned checkout . However, these days the supermarkets have got wiser to this, and have added more and more self scanners, and less manned tills, so when I'm shopping in my lunch hour, and there's only 2 manned checkouts open out of 36 and a half mile long queue at each ...and there's 20 Self scan tills open and 10 of them free and no queue , I have to admit to all of you in the confessional that I do go through the self scan with my 4 or 5 items just for speed occasionally ! ..I hate myself for it, and wear a hair shirt as penance at least once a week...and I beg your forgiveness , and ask for a prayer for my soul!!:praying:

.......but in my defence I do always, always go to a manned checkout when I have a trolley load

NO WAY! I play cashier I want a discount. Taking in money/payment is a basic part of any business. If you don't want to do then get out.

Geez, it's not as if you've killed someone!

Didn't want to start a new thread but I just found out TODAY that some stores have carts that lock the wheels if taken off their property! Saw a sign on the way out.

Duh! WHERE have I been??!

HD, when pressed for time; on a lunch hour etc. and the nasty store will have only TWO manned checkouts available, it's understandable.

Someone also posted here awhile back about a fast food chain installing robots. Was it MacDonald's?

Despicable!!!

Robots, interesting but not unexpected. I remember a few years back reading where Micky D's was experimenting with a remote call center taking your order. Whatever happened with that, do they use it?

If I wanted to be a cashier I would have done it earlier in life. Nope, I pick it out, I tote it home, I put it away and my wife cooks it, but I'll be damned if I am going to help with the elimination of overhead by replacing their help with MY help.

One chain of dollar stores here has started bolting a long tall pipe to the front of the carts, so they won't go out the door. If you have more than one armload of stuff you have to leave some inside and come back and get the rest. Isn't that crazy!?

I rarely use them, don't like them at all. I've used them less than ten times total in the past, usually when I have one item and cash in hand. I usually pay for my groceries with checks, so even if I use the self check out, I have to deal with a cashier anyway, only have to wait longer because she's fussing with other people. I was at Kroger's today, and the woman walked two checkers over to me to tell me that she'll take care of me over there (self-serve), I told her no thanks, she insisted to come, and I told her no.

Another thing that bugged me is the cashier I was in line for was asking the customer before me is she used her Kroger gas points, when she said yes, she started giving the customer her name, and circling a survey number on her receipt, then questioning if she ever filled on out before and encouraging her to fill it out this time.

That was fine, but when I paid for my stuff, she asked me about the gas points and if I used them, I told her no, (because I don't ever use them or get gas there). Instead of just accepting my answer, she said 'no?' and asked me why I don't use them. I told her because I don't want to. She looked surprised and said no more.

Had I started explaining anything to her about why I don't use their gas points, or giving excuses as to why I buy my gas elsewhere, she likely would have stood there trying to change my mind. I like polite...don't care for pushy at all.

My little supermarket down the street does not have a self-scanner and the grocery carts do not lock so we can take them outside. However, it does have a security guard who watches over things. People are very good about returning the carts when they are done with them. The gigantic supermarkets have self scanners, but I never use them.

SB I agree... I hate that with a passion when they try and force you into using a SC till, I get really arsey about it...I am the boss of me thank you, I will decide which till I'll use thank you very much!!

Incidentally our shops (stores) haven't accepted cheques as payment for anything in years...we can still pay bills through the post with cheques , and we can still pay cheques into our bank accounts but we can't use them as payment in any shops !! Only cash or cards!!

There is a TJ Maxx store near me with those carts that lock up before you can get them out the door and a dollar-store with the long pole that won't let the cart out of the door.

They offer to bring your bags out to the curb if you will pull your car up. (well, I guess they'd HAVE to)

The supermarkets don't do this, but their carts are stolen all the time. My usual market got in about 50 brand new SMALL-style carts, which I loved, about a year ago. They are now gone; every single one of them stolen!

Maybe this is payback for eliminating staff in favor of the self-checkouts?
