Do you wake up early regardless of how late you were up?

Hi everyone! Do you wake up very early regardless of how late you were up the night before? I wake up around 4 every morning even though I may be up until 11, 12 or 1 the night before. I asked my brother if he did this and he says he is the same way. Is this normal for our age or is it just us and in our genes?

I wake up early no matter what....I don't think I've slept past 6:00 am in my whole life and that includes when I travel and time changes.

Today I woke up at 3:30 am...did go to bed early though, probably asleep by 9.

No, I sleep like a log. Once I go to sleep I rarely get up to go to the bathroom. I almost always have to set an alarm to wake up in the morning (@7:30), and if I hit the snooze too many times kitty will come in and yowl until my feet hit the floor. She wants breakfast!

With no alarm I wake up 8:30 - 9:00am.

I'm so envious of applecruncher. My sleeping habits are so erratic but I am starting to sleep better but I've been an insomniac since I was a child. Oh, and I seldom wake up early no matter what time I finally get to sleep.

I rarely ever get more than 4 hours sleep regardless of what time I go to bed. If I'm very tired early in the evening, I dare not go to bed because I'll be awake again by midnight ..and up for the rest of the night... I wish I could find something that would help me sleep through the night, that doesn't make me feel groggy during the day... I feel constantly exhausted

I worked third shift most of my work life. It is customary for the State Police to work rotation shifts, first, second and third. However, I was usually able to convince the Barracks Commander to allow me to work just third shift and because most every Trooper hated the third shift, he gladly accepted my offer.

So now, even being retired, I have problems with staying in bed, no matter what time I may go to sleep.

Working rotating shifts is a more disruptive lifestyle than taking a straight shift, even an undesirable one, like 1st watch which(with SBCSD) is/was 12 midnight to 0800.

Back in the '70s when I worked at a steel mill, we rotated days-swing-grave and changed shift every week. Good thing I was young, that would kill me now.

Yes, I do. This morning it was 3:45. And I said to myself, may as well get up, wait on the paper and drink coffee, which is what I did. Then went to church and fortunately, afterwards I was able to nod off about 2:15 PM for a minute or two. I wonder what about getting older causes this?

Of course, sleeping with a bipap machine makes it more difficult to sleep more than 6 hr at a time, some nights none at all. I'm barely able to keep up with the required 4 hr average that is required by Medicare to stay in compliance, otherwise I could lose my machine, which won't be mine until I complete 13 months in compliance. (end of February) But that's a topic for another day.

My lady and I, since retirement, have fallen in to a habit of waking around 3AM
And getting up
Staying up for 2-3 hours
She knits/crochets or fiddles on the web
I fiddle on the web or write (if in the mood)

Thing is, that ‘second sleep’ is magic, sooooo profoundly sweet
Drifting off, consciously drifting off
Cool side of the pillow
Covers just right
Spooning, most times
The fullest, most vitalizing rest I’ve ever experienced

Thought we were onto some new thing
Ready to write about it
Then, after an early morn session
My lady showed me this;

Anyway, after 50 years of alarm wake up
That second sleep just….plain….rocks

And
After that second sleep
I can be found wearing wunna these expressions;

I have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. Usually I get into a deep sleep around 4 AM which means I sleep until about 8:30 sometimes 9. Hubby has his second cup of coffee with me while I have my 1st. Then I'm good to go all day. Never sit down or watch TV until around 8 PM for a couple of hours. In bed by 10PM but read for another couple of hours.

Rarely have much trouble sleeping. At my age, a trip or two (depending on how early I go to bed) to the bathroom is a necessity. I usually wake sometime between 6:30 and 8:30. I doubt if, after 25 years of retirement, my (then) early waking work years have any effect on my present sleeping habits. I guess I'd say that I rise when the spirit moves me!! :)

Oldman, I asked my doc about sleeping for 4 hours hard, getting up for awhile and then sleeping again. He educated me about second sleep and said it was normal so I have not worried about it since!

Me, too, with the four hour sleeps. But check out Gary O's post. Some nights "second sleep" works for me as a solution to the chronic fatigue. There are as many nights when it's another four hours before I can get to sleep for the second round, and I am very fatigued the following day. I drink a shot of vitamin B12 on those days. But yay for the nights when it works out.

I think it’s normal, it’s said we need less sleep as we age

Usually, the later I go to bed the better I sleep but I can wake up at various times, never the same time each day, if I wake in the early hours I sometimes get back to sleep if not I make a cup of tea, go back to bed, read or use my iPad until I feel drowsy again

I usually go to bed around 11, and the school bus back up alarm while picking up the kids across the road at 7:30 signals my get up time....so, I can usually get a solid 8+ hours most nights. However, when we go to the city to visit the kids and casinos, I almost have to have a glass of wine late in the evening to relax enough to get a good nights sleep...otherwise, I'm up at 4AM thinking its time to hit the games again. What messes me up is if I plop down in the recliner and turn on some dumb TV show, I fall asleep there for an hour or so, and that nap throws me out of sync...so I have to stay up till Midnight to get back on track.

I was one of six kids. Three of us were day people and three were night owls, and Mom said we were like that from the time we were born. My preference is to stay awake reading or whatever until late at night and then sleep late. I've always been a sound sleeper and nothing wakes me up, so I'm not bothered by normal daytime noises. My family love to tell stories about things I've slept through.

I used to get up really early in my working years a lot of the time, so now that I'm retired, I have no desire to get up before dawn or be on any schedule. I guess I usually go to bed between 11 and midnight, but many times will listen to the radio under my pillow and stay up if the show is interesting. I'm up between 7 and 9am, regardless of how late I actually fell asleep. Generally get between 7 and 8 hours sleep, much more than I got during my working life.

Sometimes I'm wide awake in the middle of the night, and then I usually go to the computer. My postings then are usually too long, too typo-laden, or both.
