Do You Wear a Large Brimmed Hat To Protect Against Sun Or Rain?

I hate wearing hats, but I've been wearing a ball cap to protect my eyes against the sun. The brim still doesn't cover all the sun and glare from all directions when walking outside. I'm thinking of ordering a wide brimmed hat online, something I have never worn in my life.

Do you wear a wide brimmed hat on a regular basis? Is it stiff or floppy? Any complaints about wearing it, or are you happy with it? Thanks for your input. :)

Yes I wear a wide brimmed hat in the hot sun.... always...

I bought a wide brim hat online that said one size fits all. It ended up being too small for my head. I should have sent it back but it didn't cost that much and my car was broken down so I had no way to get to the UPS store.

Anyhow all I can suggest is to shop for a hat where the hats and heads are measured for accuracy.

I have worn a large hat in the summer, but I always had to tie it down because it tended to fly off my head! I try not to get the hat that has little holes in it because they end up showing as dots on your face.
Thank you, good advice and interesting about the holes. I wonder if some of them come with a chin tie, that can be out of the way when not needed. I've had to put my ball cap in my pocket on some windy days, not enough hands to keep holding it down.

Thanks Ruthanne. You would think that one size fits all would cover everyone. I have a big head, would hate to order one I couldn't wear. I wouldn't return it either, too much hassle.

There was a time, before central heating, when smoking didn't kill you, when everyone wore some sort of hat. Everything from a top hat to a schoolboy's cap. Hat's went out of fashion, followed by suits, neck ties, polished shoes and just about any sort of apparel that gave a groomed image.
Contrary to social media remarks, people don't mock a hat, not once have I heard: "Hey, Indie!" But I have heard, "great hat," many times. My choice of hat is the fedora, it has a wide brim and affords shade. Fedoras are available in straw for summer wear, I have a few of those, but my hat is part of the "ensemble" that I am wearing on the day. Everything either matches or contrasts, from the hat down to the shoes.

Yes, in the summer when I'm out doing a lot of yard work I'll either wear a ball cap or I have a wide brimmed. Otherwise I don't usually wear one. Also like to have on a long sleeve shirt with the hat. Started doing that way back before I retired when I was working outside all day.. ☀️

I wear a ball cap or visor for outdoor summer work or walks to protect against sun glare. I’ll wear a ”bucket hat” also if it’s capable of being shaped Into something other than a formless mess. I like a fedora as a fashion statement, but am protective of them and unlikely to use them as a work hat…

Yes. I wear a "coolie hat" when I work outside on sunny days. My son brought it back from a trip to southeast Asia some years ago, while he was in the Navy.

I wear a ball cap a lot. Year 'round. Because I'm bald on top.
Thanks Frank. Is that the hat with the flap in the back to cover the neck?

Thank you, I'll have to look up bucket hat.

Through most of the 1980s a hat (and in Winter a topcoat) were almost a "uniform" for commutes when I worked in the Capitol Complex, white shirt and tie if not a jacket too at work going without saying.

The only exception for me was in the late 1970s when I got my first job down there as a technician, which got my foot in the door. Different class, different "uniform."

Virtually all of my coats have hoods...never buy a coat without a hood anymore - saves needing an umbrella or scarves. Even have very lightweight Hanes sweaters with hoods. In summer, wear a straw type hat if I go out in the shank of the day, otherwise just an open brimmed baseball type hat. Works for me anyway.
