Doctor pays $500k for mocking/insulting patient

Yes, I heard that on the news this morning, really something! We suspected we were often mocked while under anesthesia; now we know. For 500K, they can say whatever they want about me, though!

Haha! :)

I admit I was a little surprised by the size of the award.

I never thought of anyone being mocked by medical professionals while under anesthesia, learn something new everyday. Better than an angry doctor doing irreparable puncture damage during a rough colonoscopy though, I've heard a couple of stories like that.

This is just another pathetic case of people being people, folks! Projectile derision remains the human animal's number one method of bolstering his own perpetually lagging self-esteem. The other guy simply HAS got to be 'wrong' in order for us to be 'right'.

I'd take that half a mil payoff for sleeping through a little 'trash talk' any day of the week, though.

I’ve been on jury duty several times. I actually enjoyed serving (although there was a lot of sitting/waiting, etc.) I deliberated 2 criminal cases, 2 civil (one was settled prior to deliberation). It’s sometimes very hard to make a determination, and harder to decide an award.

In this case, I feel the award was a bit high (I’m assuming the jury felt doctor’s insurance could easily cover). But…..although I would want to give that doctor a hard slap in the face (figuratively), and I would have awarded $250,000 (leaving the plaintiff with $165K)…about half of what was awarded.

Generally speaking, juries don't seem to like doctors - and I think they sent a message with that $500K award.

Mocked by medical professionals, mechanics, contractors, retail store employees etc you name the industry and frequently the patient or customers are spoke of as the enemy even though they are the ones paying which is something I never quite understood. I've been in stores and have over heard congregating employees say things like I wish there are no customers tonight-hellooo, store=paying customers=money=paycheck.

I try to tell people things like don't get important work done on a Monday or Friday because most employees are there for a paycheck and cannot wait to leave. The focus is on the clock and not their work & customers. And yes angry employees could make a "mistake" accidently, on purpose or accidently on purpose. Most work to live, not live to work. Their trade is their money train ; not their alter.

People in the health care industry are just as "sensitive" and/or immature as the cashier at McDonalds. Dare not diss them or they'll diss you right back and then some.

I agree, WhatInThe. Also, when I'm having a bad day, not feeling well, etc. I try to still be nice to store/restaurant workers, etc. (Flies....honey vs vinegar, ya know?)

One of my doctor's nurses retired a few yrs ago, and I made a special effort to take her a bunch of fresh flowers on her last day. She had been so nice to me throughout 20+ yrs. She hugged me and cried. I also take time to write a complimentary letter if someone goes above and beyond.

You are doing with what the service provider should be doing for you the patient or customer. With several so called medical "professionals" present you would've have figured someone could have put a stop to it or stepped in and reminded it's not professional or nice. True professionalism is lost among most today. When you are getting paid especially when you are getting paid to say thenleast treat your customer nice and/or do NOT let extenuating circumstances affect you. A true professional can do their job wether they like their customer or not or they are having a bad day. Part of professionalism is being able to separate or stop raw emotion from affecting your work.
