Does anyone have Parakeets?

I had a bird when I was a teen. We gave it away, when I left home. But I believe there's a whole lot more to the mating process than just putting a male with a female. I don't know more than that. You're going to have to do a lot of homework about their mating process.

I have a female parakeet. The male mate just died a week ago.

The female had laid some eggs but they didn't hatch.

What do you want to know about caring for them?

Beautiful cage and birds Oldguy. I know they're popular as pets, but

I could NEVER keep one in a cage. They are born to FLY. And I wouldn't deprive them of that opportunity. Sorry.

My bird's cage is always open until it's sleep time and then I still leave the door ajar so she can come out when she wants. Domestic birds are raised in homes just like dogs and cats are. Mine have always flown around and enjoyed themselves and been very happy.

Like Ruthanne I let mine fly about also. When mine gets tired he goes into his cage and sleeps for awhile. I had parakeets for years before graduating to Cockatiels. A few things I learned along the way. I use to put gravel in the bottom of the cage. Our vet told me they don't need it and he had many birds die because the sand got packed in their crop. Lettuce and to many greens will give the bird diarrhea.

You have to watch the female,if she is about to lay an egg she may get egg bound and will die if she can't lay the egg. This happened to mine and I had to take her to the vet. My keets have laid eggs but I was never lucky enough to have any hatch. For breeding, you need proper nesting material, and a nesting box. Probably some supplements to the diet as well. If they hatch the babies have certain requirements as well.

Most important is to pay attention to them and love them, they will return your care with hours of fun and friendship. Your cage is nice a roomy and in a nice spot near the window. Another word of caution,be careful of the windows if you let them fly. Just like outdoor birds they can fly right into it a break their necks. Also some like a bath. Watch out for drafts as well. I also give my bird liquid vitamin drops in the water which I change daily. Hopefully your birds will live a long life. My bird is 16 now.

If you are going to give them fruit and veggies make sure they are organic and very fresh. Don't leave them in the cage longer than 3 hours. Millet is a special treat I have always given my budgies. I give them a branch every Friday or once a week. If you train them you can use this as a reward. There are many good foods out there for them. There is one I want to get but I have to look up the name of the doctor. I'll get back to you on it; it is full of fruits and veggies.

Once the birds get used to their cage they will feel it's their safe home. So when they do go out of it they will go "home" to rest. Buy lots of paper towels and cleaner because they will poop and pee on your furniture; anywhere. I wouldn't leave any food out/uncovered when the birds are out.

I'm afraid to let them out of the cage because they might not go back into cage. Thanks for the help.
They will go back in eventually if you open the door. Are their wings clipped? If their wings are clipped I would put the cage on the floor and open it up for awhile. They will go back to the cage for food and water.

I had the oddest dream about Parakeets just last night and I have no idea what brought it on.

I dreamed I was in some kind of retail dept. store and this woman was looking at some live Parakeets that came packed in a box. The salesperson open the box and it was full of different colored live Parakeets. They were all very healthy and seemed quite happy. Then the salesperson picked up a couple to show the woman, using a pair of wooden tongs with ends that looked kind of like the toes of a bird's foot.

Like I said, the birds all seemed quite happy and content in their box.

Strange.

No parakeets but on our travels we see laurikeets. Galahs and cockatoos, black ones and white ones. Magpies as well. They r beautiful.
