Does Apple Watch Fall Detection Replace Medical Alert Systems?

Do you guys think the new Apple Watch with fall detection is simple enough to use for a not too tech savvy 82 year old who needs fall detection / protection? Or is it too complicated? Need to get some type of alert system for my mother and wondering what technology is now best / easiest / most reliable? Advice would be appreciated!

I have one of the new Apple Watch series 4 that my daughter bought for me, and I LOVE it ! I am almost 74, but fairly tech savvy. You would need an iPhone to be able to use the watch, and if your mom can use the iPhone with no problems, then she can also be fine with the Apple Watch.
The new series 4 watch seems to have been re-designed with seniors in mind, it has so many new benefits for people our age !

The falling feature is a great thing, and mine has actually been triggered once or twice when I stumbled, but didn’t fall, because I was able to catch myself first.
The watch asks if you have fallen, and you can respond yes or no, and then it asks if you need to call for help . If a person fell and can’t respond at all, then it will automatically call 911 emergency and also the persons emergency contacts, as well as give their location.

One really good feature is that this will work anywhere the person is at, so you do not have to be near a home phone, like so many of the medical alerts need to have.
There are lots of other great features as well, like the emergency help button, being able to check your heart rate, and now I can even take an EKG of my heart.

If your mom is able to use this , I would definitely recommend it ! I actually have written several threads on here about how much I love my Apple Watch !

Thanks! That is really helpful. My concerns are two fold. First, she's not that technically savvy. Second, her eyesight is great. I'm worried she'll have difficulty pressing the right buttons or even seeing the options on the Apple Watch. Especially if she falls and her glasses get knocked off. How will she be able to see which button to press. I found this comparison chart of medical alert devices, and most companies now have mobile options, so you don't need a landline and you can use them outside your house and if you have an emergency outside your home, GPS will send responders right to your location. Thoughts?
