Dog Parks and Youngsters

Our local nature reserve has two big dog parks. Two fenced in lots where they can play with doggie friends. One side is for pups under twenty pounds, but bigger gentle dogs are welcome. The other side is for the big guys. If there's a nice mix everyone gets along. Some scuffles but usually it's just a lot of running and play wrestling.

It just concerned me today. There was a young mom and a child of perhaps two years old. I don't know if one of the dogs was theirs or they were just socializing...but I was really afraid for this little boy. Most of the dogs were his height or bigger. There were a bunch of bully mixes. Obviously I'm not saying that means they are aggressive, but they are strong.

Callie adores the attention of children. But he's a beefy boy, if he's running down the hall he could knock over an adult like a bowling pin. I didn't say anything but I just think young kids in the dog park is a bad idea. I've seen people bring in strollers. There's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Then again sometimes people figure it out on their own. One day there was a couple, no kids, but they decided to bring in breakfast. They sat down on a bench and their dog darted off to play. Suddenly the other dogs got the scent of egg McMuffins. Those folks barely made it out of the fence with their food. Silly humans.

makes you wish there were signs up stating enter at you own risk, and dogs are as unpredictable as your child. Dog's and dog owners are not liable for what may happen to your youngster.
