Dogs Left in Hot Cars

Recently saw a disturbing video of a Chihuahua mix that was left in a hot car and almost died. They said when they rescued the dog it was over 200 degrees in the car. I don't know where it was, but they showed a video of the poor dog panting terribly, tongue hanging low, very desperate. Last I heard, after emergency care, he was experiencing neurological disturbances from the overheating.

I knew someone years ago who left a puppy in a car for hours. The car was parked in the shade and the windows were partially opened, the temp was in the 70s. The owner really didn't think the dog would be harmed, and was shocked to find that she had actually died from the heat. Painful lesson learned there.

I have left my dogs in the car in the past for a very short period of time, around ten minutes to run into a store and get one or two items. Always had windows partially open and car in shaded parking spot. Never had an issue, my pets are my babies and they are first on my mind, would never even make them uncomfortable.

My husband has left the dog in the car once in the past with the air conditioning on, again, short run into the store and out again. Recently on the news, a man said he did the same with his dog in his truck and someone stole his truck with the dog in it. I'm not sure if he ever found the truck or dog.

Have you ever left your dog in the car and had a bad experience due to the heat?

I have left my dog in the car with the AC on and the door locked for a very short period of time. I used my other key to get back in. I won't do it anymore because here it is illegal to leave your car running without being in it. When I go to the store now I leave my dog at home. If it is cold or cool outside sometimes I will leave her in the car for a short time and run in the store to get something. Mainly now, though, I leave her home.

BTW, in my state it is legal to break a window if you see a child, children or a dog in the heat in there and suffering.
 
I usually leave my dog home now too Ruthanne. If I take him to the park, and just have to pick up an item or two at the supermarket, I'll drive him home and go back out again. In winter it's different, but better in summer to leave them home.

I see a lot of people with their dogs in stores, I guess it's allowed now from the amount of folks I see. I don't mind the dogs in the store at all, but still, mine would be more relaxed at home.
 

Never understood why anyone would leave a child or pet in a car whether the a/c was on or not. Life gets busy but I never did that with mine. Better to make another trip or have a babysitter.
 
When we traveled to Texas to visit out daughter a few years back we had to take our dog. I definitely didn't want to leave him in a kennel. We had AC installed in our car that would turn on automatically when we pushed the button on the key. When we went into a restaurant for lunch we chose a table by the window so we could see our car. We could see our dog also. Every few minutes my hubby would start the AC so he would be comfortable while we ate. We watched constantly to make sure he wasn't panting or in any distress.

I take my dog in the bank but most of the stores I go to don't allow dogs unless they are service dogs. Wish they'd allow dogs in more places.

I did that once too while going in a restaurant. I sat by the window, too, and watched.
