Don't Ya Just Hate Updates?!

My phone did an update this morning. Some of the icons have changed, it's harder to see the battery percentage now (they're using a tiny oval shaped icon with tiny text that "shows" how low the battery is using white and gray areas. Not particularly useful ! Then I went to call my son. What happened to my favorites?! Now I have to scroll up and down to find apps (not in folders) instead of swiping to the side. The latter method was better because I knew where, on what page, each app was on. Also I had to go in and reset the time out screen, lock screen, etc. Uggggh! ☹️

Last year, updating my Mac caused such a problem that I wound up getting a PC, something I never thought I'd do again. A friend of mine and I have said that Apple upgrades are really downgrades.

I don't like to do updates on my laptop or phone actually, but I do them.
I am not as regular with doing laptop updates, it's all in my attitude I guess
but I do eventually get them done. I have a good friend who actually reminds
me to pay attention and do them in a timely manner. He's smart about all that
stuff, anything technical, anything complicated and is very knowledgeable.

To be exact, I HATE DOING THEM.

After the latest phone update, I ran into the same issues. When the problems persisted, I tried restarting it by pressing the small side button. Instead of seeing the usual power-off options, an AI assistant popped up. After several failed attempts, I had to Google it and found out that now you have to press and hold both side buttons at the same time to power off the device

I keep reading that it's best to update our devices so that we're sure to have the latest security features. I do update when my devices "tell me" it's time to update, but I do so with trepidation.

Linux updates have never caused a problem. Carry a flip phone that gives you one or two basic updates and there is nothing about it where security is an issue.

I'm lucky to have my son who bothers to figure out how his phone works. So if I have something change, he'll probably know how to fix it back. After this latest update something significantly changed on the desktop display and we were able to switch it back.

Although I've been figuring out stuff on my "new" Dell PC, my son helps me with some tech stuff too OldFeller. How lucky we are. :)

If you are using an Android phone, you can change that in the settings menu so that one press will give you the option to turn off your phone.
  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Advanced Features.
  3. Select Side Button.
  4. Under the Press and hold section, choose Power off menu.

I don't mind updates on my Dell desk computer but hate that they want me to do an install of Windows 11. I am only partially able to do that on this computer and I have to keep clicking not to install. I really need a new computer but keep putting it off as this computer still works well.

What do you mean by "partially able"? Does 11 stall when you try to upgrade? That's what happened with one of the upgrades I tried to install on my Mac. I was able to do another upgrade later but that caused the "spinning beachball of death" to occur at almost every operation. After a couple of months I couldn't take it anymore and brought a Dell about 17 months ago. This one came with Windows 11.

@OneEyedDiva My computer states on the updates that I could install Windows 11 but not as capable as some other computers by the language used. It must state that as the computer is over 10 years old.

They want to install Windows 11 and want me to decide when. So, I click on do not install at this time and keep doing that as I think it will cause the computer not to work.

I so despise updates! The worst thing that ever happened after one was that I lost all my music! A friend's computer wiz son came over and managed to retrieve it, but I was so shook up I've either delayed or dispensed with updates ever since.

I absolutely hate updates. In my humble opinion, they never fix anything - and simply change how things look and feel.

If I could, I would NOT update my phone or computer. I would go back to Windows 7 or there abouts, and whatever system was on my phone 10 years ago. LOL
