Dreading the fireworks.

There is going to be all sorts of them going off tonight . (My dog freaks out ) The worst of it ... are people in the neighborhood lighting off their own. It's illegal here .. but that won't stop anyone. It sounds like gunshots !

Last year , a huge firework exploded too soon - and it rained down hot ashes over the crowd. Lots of people were burned .
I can't imagine that happening around a dry area especially with all the forest fires. So what's it like in your neck of the woods ?

Some years people are active and other years it is calm.

The police don't do much other than maintain high visibility and caution the dumbest folks that they encounter.

The only thing that bothers me is the sound of the cinders falling on the roof. It always makes me think that a misdirected rocket or Roman candle could come flying in the window.

I do enjoy the professional displays and get a good view of a couple from my bathroom and living room windows.

I don't blame you Toomuchstuff, I was the same way years ago when a couple of my dogs were very fearful of thunder and fireworks. The last dog I had, Hans, was very stressed each year and I just tried to stay calm myself, keep him inside and go out in the yard with him for his nightime potty. He clung to me and panted heavily the whole time, my husband and I felt so sorry for him, we just loved him and tried to comfort him, made the TV a little louder and tried to ignore the outside noise. I used calming remedies on him, but they did nothing.

They're illegal where I live, but people still shoot them off in the neighborhood. We've had drought-like conditions and numerous wildfires are currently burning across the state. I really wish nobody would celebrate with fireworks when conditions are so dry. They've already started a few days ago where I live, but it hasn't been too bad....yet.

Luckily, the young dog I have now is not too bothered by them, he is definitely aware, but shows no real signs of fear or stress.

I think I read somewhere to wrap your pet snugly in a blanket for a feeling of security. Can't hurt to try it. If it works, let us know.

While driving in rag top last night someone set off a LOUD one. We actually felt the concussion. I wrenched my back which is still healing from a compression fracture. Don't want to be a party pooper but it sort of pissed me off.
Had a good friend whose gorgeous golden retriever died of fright on a July 4th when neighbors were shooting loud fireworks.
I REALLY feel bad for jumpy PTSD sufferers.

I seldom ever hear a firecracker where I live. I know that if I lived in town, it would be very different. I should have mentioned another way to spare dogs from the noise: drive out into the country away from the crowds. You'll likely hear nothing.

I wonder why loud noises don't bother cats.

More dogs get lost on July 4th than any other day. Amimal shelters and dog pounds get overcrowded with scared runaways. I don't understand why people leave their dogs out unleashed, especially during fireworks!

Blanket wrapping sounds good for tiny dogs. A member here recommends the Thunder Jacket.

I see dogs looking for cover, not just in bed with you, but a den-like area. Under the bed helps but too big and you're probably not there.

I found a good place for my doggie for thunder and fireworks- under a small end table in the corner of the couch and loveseat, on which I am often sitting in a corner of. She has a den-like enclosure, 3 walls and a roof.

Funny, how they go "back to the wolf". The roof is important- woof.

My dog gets totally terrified. I have to stay up with him until around 2:00 on New Years. Not as bad on July 14th. Here on New Years fireworks are supposed to be "religious". Religious my behind! I have a solution for these folks who make neighborhoods into war zones: join the military and go to war with real fireworks!!! Totally not caring about animals and birds. Wackos!

I have tried tranquilizers with my last small dog but it's really scary having to watch them all night on wobbly legs and not knowing if it could possibly kill them and for what? Just to have demented people enjoy war noises? And--seriously true, people's hands have been blown off, an eye has been injured and people actually killed dead! Fools!

I absolutely, totally hate it!

Last night as the evening went on, there were more and more fireworks going off in my neighborhood, and even the illegal ones that shoot into the sky were being used. My dog did end up being a bit concerned about all the racket outside. When I let him out in the yard right before I went to bed so he could take a last peewee, I watched him through the porch window to be sure he was okay. He stepped off the porch, looked up and all around, turned around and came back onto the porch. So, I went out with him into the yard to do his business, and he was okay, not too fearful like my old dog Hans.

There you go. Two houses on Maui were destroyed by kids playing with fireworks. Fortunately, the residents got out safely after giving up trying to contain the fire because of the thick smoke. The total cost of the damage was $1 million. Fireworks except for aerial displays by professionals should absolutely be illegal. On last New Year's Eve, one male was seriously injured and one woman died.

Was it as bad as you thought it would be? Hope all is well with you and your dog. What is your dogs name?

'Twas a quiet even

Turns out, one doesn't require noise to celebrate
peace was our festivity

Jane .... it was as bad as I expected. I'm right on the main street in the city and all I could hear from the side streets is BOOM BOOM BOOM . Add to that the real fireworks going off ! I had all my windows closed and the TV on , so it was a little bit muffled. I heard some going off at 3 am ...... idiots

In Columbia, MO., about 80 miles north of us, a "Tradition" of "fireworks wars" has been going on for the past few years...in one of the "challenged" neighborhoods. These Nut Cases turn their neighborhood into almost a War Zone during their "celebration". There seems to be no shortage of candidates for the Darwin Awards in that part of the city.

What a bunch of jerks. Sorry, but if they want to fight, enlist, go to Afghanistan or wherever their country needs them and fight for real, IF they have the cojones! At least, get paid and fed.

Hah, different story, now. Might have to make their own beds.

We were lucky- no fireworks in our condo community, which only used to have a few anyway, but I was surprised that the surrounding neighborhoods were quiet.

The only noise was from a local amusement park and they weren't too loud, except for the finale. So, doggie went into her "den" under the end table, next to me on the couch; didn't tremble or pant at all. I was so relieved she felt ok.

Gary O', that looks nice and tranquil there.

My dog is 14 and can't hear the fireworks anymore, but I haven't been liking the sounds every night from the neighborhood popping off stuff. It's illegal, but it still continues.
