Duck hunting back in the day.

A friend of mine let me use his duck blind that he built in the river in front of his house.
I got in that blind in the early mornings and would lay out my string of decoys.
The ducks seemed to prefer the bend way down river just inside of the city limits.
I would watch them get up and fly around and land again, always way down river.
No amount of calling could get any to come my way.
So I rigged up a lit cigarette that I used for a fuse to light a cherry bomb and used some sand for ballast in a coffee can.
I had timed the bomb so that I knew it could go for 12 minutes before exploding.
I sat the sand weighted cigarette fused coffee can bomb loose in the current figuring it had enough time to make it to the bend but it got caught in some side currents and instead of making it to the bend it exploded right next to the next guy’s blind downriver. It was just boom boom. They shot so quickly after my floating bomb went off that I figured that they had gone to sleep and the explosion scared them awake causing that quick blast.
I sat in my blind laughing , just thinking about how my bomb went off next to that blind down river.
I ran into one of the guys from the other blind and asked him about it.
He said “No they didn’t accidentally shoot when the bomb went off.” He said that he had his eye on a duck and he shot at it when the bomb scared it into the air.
He must have had his gun aimed and his finger on the trigger to shoot that quickly because it was just boom boom about as fast as you can say it.
I finally shot a couple of ducks that I called in to decoys on a pond.
Took them home and cleaned them and my wife baked them.
We didn’t care for the taste of wild duck so I sold my decoys and put duck hunting behind me but I’m sure glad that I have those memories about early morning duck hunting.
