Duvets

We have had duvets since we were first married in 1969, when given one as a wedding present. There is no way we would ever wish to revert to the old style bedding with blankets etc. We buy new duvets about twice a year, we have synthetic fibre ones as I appear to be allergic to the ones filled with feathers, which make my eyes water these days.

Do you prefer to use a duvet or the bedding of yesteryear?

A duvet every time. We got one as a wedding present in 1973 , although then they were called 'continental quilts'. We also got a lot of blankets. I mentioned this to my mother who just started ranting about being ungrateful, but the blankets were never used - well not on our bed anyway.

I must be the only person who can't stand them; I think it's because I was doing something wrong when using them, my fillers always seemed to end bunch up on one side more than another and like with pillow cases, I'm just lazy when it comes to reloading. :( Pillow cases however are a necessary evil.

Duvets, I have used them from the 60's but I only have down . I make my own linens as I find duvet covers in North America are funny sizes and it is hard to get a choice for deign. If the cover is the right size for the duvet inside they don't bunch up.

I am a bit confused about the answer from Temperance. I have a duvet which is a down filled sack somewhat like a comforter but usually white and also have a duvet cover which fits over it which is removed weekly for laundering, is that not what you have? Your answer suggests you have two similar things together???

Sorry for your confusion Jeannie. We may be speaking of two different things. My duvet covers have no filling whatsoever, their simply a cover for other items, like a quilt, comforter filled with batting , or in my case I use it with my down comforter. It's like a huge pillow case, plain and simple. You can change the entire look of your bedding simply by using another duvet cover. Hope this helps you.

Yes I get it, you are talking about a duvet cover, not a duvet, your down comforter IS your duvet. I have the same , some folks call the down part a comforter and some a duvet. Originally a duvet was a down filled sack but later on they produced them in poly and of course comforters can be plain or floral etc.

Mine are not heavy by the way, if they have feathers they are heavy but 100% goose down is extremely light, sad thing it is very hard to find 100% these days. I haven't made a new one for a few years as with care they last for years ,but I use to buy the down by the pound. I do find the feather ones degrade faster and have to be chucked.

At least with a duvet you can easily kick it off at night it you feel too hot, unlike sheets and blankets.
