DVD Player problem for me....

I can no longer play DVDs on my player.
My local library is now using the Stingray RFID device right on the disc which thickens it slightly and in my case I get the message.....
'This disc cannot be played check disc'

I requested a DVD for a UK series I wanted to binge watch. Got Series1 which is a 2 disc set. First disc has the Stingray applied. It is very obvious. Covers the whole disc. Second disc played with no problem so nothing wrong with my player which is only five years old.

Anyone else with that problem? Do I have to buy another type of player ?
Does your library use that technique too?

I had to ask Google, what RFID is, Mizmo.

Turns out tho be a security system, a bit like the things
that we have on bottles of booze, to prevent theft, what
did the library say when you told them?

Get a USB Thumb drive, go back to the library and borrow
the one that you can't play, put it into one of their computers
and transfer the files to your USB, that is if they USB sockets
on their PCs and if they will allow you to do that.

Maybe their security device should have been on the box.

Mike.

If you can afford it I'd buy another dvd they are not expensive now - but do check out compatability issues - I'd been playing an old set for ages and it just petered out - slung it out and got a new one for |$50 - no hassles??

The security system was originally on the box which made it easy for copying especially with games as the actual disc was not affected..
This new system apparently alerts them to it , how, I don't know, too techie for me.
Also alerts them to theft.
I doubt their computers would allow the USB transfer.
They would probably nab me on the spot.

Yes but have you played a DVD such as I described. This new Stingray product covers the whole disc and makes it somewhat thicker.
...picked this up from a library report on the net

"Stingray RFID disc tags (overlay/sticker)
In our continuing effort to dissuade our patrons from stealing DVDs and CDs from our collection, we are investigating moving our RFID tags from the cases to the actual discs. The stingray overlays are much more responsive with our door sensors (as opposed to the "hub" tags), and I'd like to use them. However, on our state library mailing list, I have seen reports of these overlays "bubbling" and rendering discs unplayable.
I have to make a final recommendation to my director and just want to cover my bases, so any input would be much appreciated."

this is one with the overlay ....covers the whole disc and that is exactly how the ones I ordered looked.

My DVD player is only 5 years old and plays all discs perfectly so don't feel like buying another at this age.
I will just have to wait until series is televised and record.

Some of our libraries only have the DVD box on the shelves. They will then place the DVD, which is stored behind the counter, into the box as the patron is checking it out.
