e-scooters - fear or fun?

Just read some news that our government is set to make rental e-scooters legal on UK roads from Saturday but not private e-scooters. An attempt to ease pressure on public transport amid the coronoavirus. Helmets must be worn and vehicle speed limited to 15mph. It noted that Electric scooters for hire are a familiar site in European and US cities  I thought it was dangerous enough with bicycles on the road but these look as if one would really be exposed to the possibility of an accident. 😟 or 🄳

In my area, I no longer see these. Maybe they passed a law against them. Idiots were riding them on sidewalks, weaving in & out of pedestrians. Several people were injured & one elderly person was killed.

To the best of my knowledge, privately-owned scooters are legal here... and there's been talk in recent months of starting rentals. If they're to be used for general transportation, though, I wonder how they expect a person to get somewhere to pick one up and back to drop it off.

I suppose much has to do with whether they'd be used on sidewalks or roadways. Although this area has some of the worst drivers in the nation, the subject reminds me of a work project I did years ago on Segways- for a personal injury lawyer...

Hit someone going15 mph and injuries will occur.
Especially when the biggest vehicular problem in this state is speeding.

I had trouble imagining folks zipping down the California freeways on Segways- but from my experiences years ago, at least Californians aren't lousy drivers.
