Earthquake in California last night

We must be a very special people, being tried and tested these days. There was an earthquake last night at 11:40 pm with magnitude 4.6 near South El Monte in Los Angeles. I felt the jolt last night though it was notifications on my phone that kept me awake. I was overwhelmed by txt messages from close friends who made sure we're fine. Knowing there are plenty of people in this world that'll reach out makes life worth living! 😇😍🤗👌👍👄
 

I was sitting on a bed watching a movie & the bed slightly moved for a second. I wasn't sure it was an earthquake until I checked a couple of chandeliers that always move in earthquakes. I had to turn on the light & stare at one to notice a very slight movement.
Because of how the house was built - with separate foundations for the bottom floors, I hardly feel earthquakes unless they're close to 5.
 

Here again, I have lived a charmed life...

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 1960s, and have never been in an earthquake. When I was at Ft. Lewis, Wash. in Basic Training, a big one hit the area where my family lived. Apparently, there was a crack in the Van Norman Lakes dam overlooking our house. The family had to evacuate for some period of time and then get daily water from city trucks in pots and pans. I missed all of that, as well as subsequent earthquakes in the area such as nearby Northridge.

Then, around 2004, I was working in Sunnyvale in the Silicon Valley area for a while and coming home on weekends when I could. One weekend I went home (to Minnesota) and came back that Monday. There was a large crack in the conference room wall. Apparently, there had been an earthquake over that weekend.

I don't think I would want to experience an earthquake, so am grateful to have not had the experience.

I have experienced at least 3 earthquakes in my life. The first was when I was in grade school in Manila. I remember a building called Ruby tower collapsed and buried a lot of people alive. The second one was a lot stronger at 8.2 which happened also in Manila right before the Mt Pinatubo volcano erupted. That was really scary to see pictures hanging in the walls swaying side to side, mirrors rattling, chairs moving, etc and it lasted about 5 minutes. There was a hotel in a city up north that crumbled, burying a lot of people alive. The third and mildest was the one last night though it was the most memorable to me.

When I lived in LA, Big Bear was where many people went on long weekends to get away. I always thought it was funny, the traffic jams out of the city to get to that and Lake Tahoe. Sorry you lost your home there. It is a beautiful place, to be sure.

You missed the Northridge quake later - 6.7. Since it happened when most people were sleeping - around 4:00 am, several celebrities were interviewed.
Madam to the stars, Heidi Fleiss was asked if she felt it.
She said, "My bed doesn't move for less than $500.00."

I have a male friend who called immediately after the quake (he lives in Lakewood) and was yelling, "hey! your bed's rattling and I wonder what you're doing!?". He's the only friend who can be irreverent and knows we'll always be friends. I'm grateful for good friends like him.
