Easy Cook’n

I’m by no means a cook but we all have to do something especially when living out in the sticks. My sister sent me an invitation to Hello Fresh for a free trial offer that I enjoyed very much. More importantly I was amazed how simple it was to follow their recipes to make a great meal. However I wasn’t about to pay that kind of price for the convenience of home delivery.

So I just downloaded the recipes that looked appealing and have been enjoying them ever since.

My favorite one is Crispy Parmesan Chicken. Who knew baked carrot were so good!

How's the portion vs. the price though?
It was too high for me, plus you end up with a lot of packaging & cold packs – not really good for the environment.

For me it’s just as easy to pick up the ingredients at the store. Sometimes where their recipe calls out for a spice blend you have to look it up on the web. So something like “Mexican Spice Blend” will work out to be:

2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons no-salt-added chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne or ground chipotle pepper (optional)

So I just make that up in bulk to have it on hand the next time.

Like I said, I’m not a cook but I can follow a recipe & that’s all I use them for.

Wondering why anyone would pay those higher prices for a recipe and just enough ingredients to make a meal or two?
Definitely ...

I am the poorest cook I know. Yesterday I had crawfish for lunch, trying to eat frozen things from the freezer.

Just the tails, I decided to try putting a little bbq sauce on them for a different flavor. However I accidently put chocolate sauce on, the bottles looked alike.

Decided to see what it tasted like and I was surprised, with a little tabasco sauce it was pretty good. Don't think chocolate crawfish is likely to catch on, but it could have been worse. Now I know the difference between the bottles...

I too had tried a few of these since my son bought me gift cards ..... it depends on the recipe some were skimpy portions some were just right

I enjoyed the ones we did and do not regret but the average price was too much IMO.
Think some like the convenience of everything portioned etc together. Some sauces were very good in the recipes.
It did show my spouse his idea of serving size was double and encouraged him to really think about portion control which has helped a bit in his weight management.
In my sons case taught him and spouse some neat cooking tricks for those beginning cooks.

The only item I don’t have on hand is the Israeli couscous and anything could be substituted.
Yep, but I found the Israeli couscous at Wal-Mart. For the Garlic Herb Butter I put together:

4 tablespoons butter, room temperature
1 garlic clove, minced
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 teaspoon parsley
1 ½ tablespoons basil
1 tablespoon oregano

Never had couscous before now I'm hooked...

I’m really kind of new to all this having been a relationships most of my life. Yeah, the wife did all the cooking but I did all the other stuff to make-up for it. So this last year being single has been a real learning experience and little gratifying too.

Talk about food, in Asian countries like Japan, you can buy TV dinners from convenient stores like 7-11 and Family Mart for a few dollars each and it is real food cooked same day. It's a shame we don't have anything of this quality and price here.

I used to know a guy who said that he was so useless in the kitchen that he couldn't even fry water! 😁
