Edible vs. Poisonous Mushrooms

Some that pop up here look ready for the kitchen, but having never received an education in identification as to size, shape, color, aroma, and other characteristics, I leave them alone. One granny was reputed to be able to differentiate.

Would any of you armed with a field guide feel confident in your ability to differentiate?

My husband taught me about a few safe and edible varieties, as for anything outside of the fact, absolutely out of the question.

Nothing to fool around with.

Like my husband, my dad was an avid outdoorsman, too, and had vast knowledge as to what could be eaten and what varieties were toxic.

No, not when the price is so high. If you survive (which you likely won't), you'll require a liver & kidney transplant - along with more than 80 anti-rejection pills/day.

Nope !! We have fungi growing in many places here, specifically in the woods behind my house , even in my own garden sometimes, but no way would I even attempt to differentiate between the edible and posionous ones. Not worth the risk unless you absolutely know what you're doing. I'm even a little wary of having mushrooms in restaurants who pick their own..

Before our courtyard renovation, we had a wooden base that held the fence. Several years ago, I noticed mushrooms growing out from the wood. I'd lived here decades already and never saw that before. I told management to remove them because we had children who played in the courtyard and I wouldn't have wanted any of them to get sick if they were indeed poisonous. I wouldn't know the difference and when I decide I want mushrooms, I'll buy them from the supermarket.

We get quite a few mushrooms in our forest, every fall. Several of the, including Morels, are supposed to be quite safe to eat, but I'm not willing to take the risk....I'd probably guess wrong.
