An Olympic Egyptian judo competitor refused to shakes hands with the Israeli that defeated him. A major no no in judo.

The judo organization will consider it progress that an Egyptian even fought an Israeli and will review the Egyptian post match behavior.

After watching the actual video I'm appalled. One has decide what and where theyre going to do it. This guy belongs in a desert at the border in military fatigues rather than in a judo uniform at the Olympics.

I read something that suggests he might be concerned as to the reception he'll get when he returns home. Apparently just being matched against the Israeli has not been acceptable to his associates and now that he hasn't even won, well, I got the impression that his name is 'mud'. If that's the case, then I would imagine that the refusal could be a face saving effort to head off repercussions at home.

I also read another comment somewhere that suggested that in his culture, shaking hands doesn't happen and that might be part of the reason. I guess we'll never really know.
 
Tough Shit. The offender should be shipped home immediately and banned from any future Olympic participation. If any of his country men follow suit,then Egypt should be banned.

Shaking hands is a sign of respect through out the majority of the world. Suck it up and show respect!

I think I saw where a bow is the only mandatory acknowledgement in Judo but I really didn't see a good bow either. If Egypt or the athlete doesn't want to accept the Olympic rules, customs and opponents then don't go period. Stay home. If being part of the international community is that hard stay home. No one is asking anyone to sign a treaty here just follow the rules and customs of good sportsmanship since it is a sport after all.
 
I agree. He and his countrymen had to have known he could have been matched up with an Israeli. If they weren't prepared to show the proper respect and good sportsmanship, they should have stayed home.

There's been several instances of this kind of thing -- maybe it's time to shelve the whole olympic thing if people aren't willing to play nice. Seems like a big fat waste of money to me.
