Tupperware, pioneer of food storage and sales parties, files for bankruptcy

CEO says company isn't going anywhere, but needs 'essential flexibility' after years of financial woes

Tupperware Brands, the company that revolutionized food storage decades ago, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Tupperware, based in Orlando, Fla., plans to continue operating during the bankruptcy proceedings and will seek court approval for a sale, "in order to protect its iconic brand," the company said just before midnight on Tuesday.

Back in the 1960s, if you hosted a Tupperware party, your girlfriends immediately put you on the "To Kill" list. "Plastic" in those days was cheap junk. My mom hated those parties, when she had to buy "overpriced plastic" junk. Plus, it didn't help that the host got her Tupperware free for hosting the party.

I knew they were in big financial trouble, but I'm sorry to see them go. IMO they made the best and sturdiest plastic storage containers. I have one tub container that I've used daily for 35 years to keep natural peanut butter in, and it's just as strong now as it was then.

Having said that, for those that believe in recycling, plastics are really the only thing needing it. Just about everything else biodegrades.

Kmart has had a range of storage containers that look almost identical to Tupperware
for prob the last 5 years or more

My daughter binned all her Tupperware and bought the Kmart ones simply because they are far easier to open

I read about the Tupperware on my ipad where is stated Tupperware doesn't disclose where it’s made now …but it’s believed to be China

Most of my pantry items are stored in glass jars as I don’t buy plastic or glass jars that are made in china that includes any preserving jars that are stamped “Aussie Mason” ….small print …states made in China

The party plan way of selling things has had its day.

And I always though Tupperware was way overpriced when cheap shop alternatives do the job just as well.

Yep and don't forget the Reject shop.

I only Recently gave my DH allot of my Tupperware for the shed, that I’d bought when my children were small
and my youngest child is 50 next month ….. I gave him them …with the option if he had a use for them …or bin them …
they are the square ones that held about 5 kg of flour/ sugar what ever …I had one for plain flour ..one for Self raising flour one for brown sugar one for white sugar , one for rolled oats one for powdered milk all had pastel blue lids.

Ive seen Tupperware way way overpriced in the op shops one occasion was a few days ago where they wanted $35. Each ….. for …3 orange canisters all clearly marked with price .

I’ve now downsized to 1 kg size decor containers 2 for flour 2 for sugar
