Dammit, Meanderer. You just made me weep all over again.
Those photos speak volumes.
Hubby and I visited Gallipoli in 2000 and hearing the Turkish side of that conflict, I was brought to tears then, not for our men because I knew their story very well, but I did not know how many of the Turkish defenders were just schoolboys. I wept for them and their mothers.
Then as the bus drove away, our Turkish guide, who had spent time in Australia and knew us well, inserted a tape that played The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and I wept again because of the futility of it all.
