Ever been evicted by a landlord ?

yes my first wife once worked for an infamous ozzie businessman who gave us luxurious properties free rental - problem was whenever he needed to sell one he would move us out to other one - finally my wife grew tired of this cos she had to do all the arranging so we finally bought one aside of his price range - downwards spiral!!

My sister lived in a rent controlled apartment. The landlord got fed up with the city dictates, he told the tenants "this place is becoming a condominium. Buy your apartment or get out". She was at retirement age, so she and her hubby moved to a beach town in Florida near her daughter. It went very well .

If tenants are able to find the first and last..and usually a deposit for another place then they can pretty much choose where they want to live.. but in the Video example, I feel that most of these people wouldn't be able to afford that..or the whole moving expenses thing..

I've been looking recently at the price of hiring a removal company, my goodness.. it's very expensive...

Yes.

I was living at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains in a building that had three apartments. The landlord was a local. I lived there with my lady friend, one had two young (20's) women living together, and the other was a guy living alone.

A month of so after moving in my partner and I began to have the strange feeling that things in the flat weren't quite the same as we'd left them that morning. Nothing major, but silly things. I ended up changing the locks, and that stopped. Then, one morning I heard a scream coming from the girls apartment. I rushed out and found her front door open. She was inside shaking. She said someone had been in her flat while she slept.

Now remember, this was in a rather remote area. There was a small town nearby, but this wasn't a heaving population. I called the landlord and told him something was going on, but that started the ball rolling. The laundry in these flats was a single room in the basement. After I'd confronted the landlord (who by now I was pretty sure was the creep letting himself into my apartment, and was also the creeper from next door) I told him I'd be ready should anyone turn up again. The next day my partner went to do the laundry, opened the washing machine, and found a snake in there! Which totally freaked her out.

Not long after, I got an eviction notice. To say I didn't feel as though it was a great loss is saying something.

This was all a long time ago now. Evictions today are happening for, largely, financial reasons as far as I can make out. Rents jumping 30%, 50%. Perceived "market value" increases being used to out tenants who had been there for 10 years or more. And of course, there are landlords like the one I encountered!!

I don't know if you've been following rentals in London, but the market is very strange these days. I recently saw a story that spoke on a flat where the landlord gave three couples permission to view. The agent administered this, and they each arrived at the same time and were allowed an allotted time to walk around. They then met outside the flat and the agent asked them to bid for the flat. Bids started at the rent the landlord wanted. Whoever was willing to pay the most over market value got the flat. The "winner" bid £300 a month over market value.

I don't know, there are things I truly hate in 2023!

NO I haven't heard of that happening... it's turning into a cut throat country altogether tbh

I haven't been a renter since age 22 but no, never got evicted. As I landlord myself I had to evict a tenant, got word from the neighbors that they were dealing drugs out of my rental house.
Yes we had to evict someone..a teacher, with references ( clearly faked)who hadn't been paying her rent for 6 months ..... we rented her the house fully furnished, and when we finally got entry she'd stolen the sofas...

Almost. Just remembered this from 50+ years ago. My roommate and I threw a party just before university ended for Christmas break and everybody came, invited or not. We’d talked to all the neighbours on the floor to let them know this was happening. Except there was a major fire across the street and the apartment manager kept wondering why all these people were coming in. Iā€˜d rented this apartment because I had a friend in higher places and he knew he couldn’t evict me. I sure did sweat for a few days.

Not there, but in some other places we did know how to throw a good party on occasion. In hindsight, what a PITA we were.

Never been a tenant. My first gf was evicted during her college days. I asked her how much she owed and she told me she wasn’t being evicted for back rent, but because she had a cat and didn’t tell the landlord. I asked her if he didn’t give her chance to get rid of the cat and she said either the cat goes or we both go. So we both went. She wouldn’t give up the cat.

Her parents were loaded so they got her another place the next day and of course, guess who got stuck with helping to move. Yeah, me.

No, but at one point we rented a house for a several years that the landlord was always way behind on paying the taxes. Ownership of the house had about 15 different names associated with it, so papers were always served to the occupants.

On two separate occasions my wife and each got served at work. For my wife it was extremely embarrassing, for me it was hilarious, several people I worked with knew this guy.

The last time they served notice to us was about 7 am one morning just before we set off for work. The deputy was most pleasant and when I pointed down the street and told him that's where the guy who owns it lives, he served it to him directly. We lived there for a couple more years after that, but would only get the papers that were mailed to the address.

Nope, never evicted, but stopped moving in on the day I was to move in. I rented an apartment where the owner lived downstairs. As I'm moving in, he said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa. I didn't know you have two cats. They'll make too much noise, walking all over the place. There will be too much racket". I figured this was not going to work out. He's worried about cat paws, and I've a high end stereo with six 100 watt speakers on the truck. Got my deposit back.
