Ever go 100 mph in a car?

I have. My Dad had just bought a new '54 Ford Victoria with a V8 engine. We were on our way to Idaho to visit my Grandparents, and somewhere on a straight flat stretch of desert highway my Dad said "Let's see how fast this thing will go." My brother and I were standing up in the back watching the speedometer climb and cheering him on, while my Mom was calling him a damn fool and a few other things. It got to about 102 before he backed off. That thing was floating. If we had hit a jackrabbit it probably would have killed us. Mom was really pissed.

People drive 120 km's here on the highways .. must convert to mph. IMO, it's too fast, and after having been rear-ended on said highway, I strongly feel the speed limit should be lowered. They are thinking of increasing it!

I don't blame your Mom for being pissed, Don.

When I was a teenager? Oh yeah! The straightaway roads in Montana? I drove INSANELY! I did the stupidest things in my old 50 Chevy! YAHOO!

I, too, have driven at high speeds....on the drag strip in my younger years, and a few times when I was alone on a straight stretch of roadway with little or no traffic. Probably the last time I did so was a couple of years after we bought our Impala LTZ...I was able to hit about 120MPH before the engine cut-off kicked in...if it were not for this "safety" feature, I'm sure the Impala would do 140.

Yes. On a state thruway. My first cat was very sick with a deadly disease & I went to an Animal Hospital in the city 115 miles away. It was in the 1970's, V8 engine and I know this wasn't the only time, but the time I remember best.

Yes I have, several times in Spain where I have a home . The motorways are very empty in places where my home is... so I have driven at high speeds for long distances before meeting any traffic at all ..... ...

However, just at the weekend my husband drove at over 100mph with me as a passenger in his car ..our roads are extremely busy so when he got a bit of a space on the motorway he sped up.. ..I didn't like it at all..I felt unsafe..

TBF his car is a high end luxury sports car and driving at 100mph doesn't feel any faster than 60mph does in my Ford... but even so....

I was the back seat passenger on a kwaki 1000 some years ago doing 160mph.... OMG..there was no hold bar at the back of the seat...and the driver ( my ex) was wearing a leather jacket so I could barely get a grip of it to hold on, I felt for sure I was going to be blown right off the back!! :eek:
 
I think that some of us just have a need for speed. I would have loved to have gone fast enough to break the sound barrier at Mach1, but my plane would have broken apart first.

You must be kidding. If it's a high end luxury car, like a Ferrari or a Porsche, those cars are built for speed, not for city driving. My next door neighbor has two Porsche's, but he's a wuss and doesn't know how to drive it. I wanted to show him, but he wouldn't let me behind the wheel, except to sit in it.

Another friend of mine once had a Lamborghini. Now, that's an automobile. I would have given my eye teeth to have been able to have that car for an hour.
 
The fastest I ever drove in a car was 125 mph. Back in the '70's I restored a '65 250S Benz I got for $3,000 from a plastic surgeon. Around 2am on an empty freeway, I got it up to 125 before I got scared. One of my passengers stood up & stuck half of him out of the sunroof.
By the way, I have a suggestion for anyone thinking of going that fast. The tires on regular passenger cars are not "Speed Rated" for speeds over 90 mph due to heat buildup; they can explode. That's why you'll notice fast cars have very wide tires - to dissipate the heat for sustained high speeds over 90.
 
A few times, but not lately.
My current car will hit 100 in one devil of a hurry if I don't watch it, and I am too old to go to jail for such nonsense anymore, ā€¦. even if it gets my old juices flowing!

That's not the only reason why race cars have wider tires. It's a lot safer. More rubber meets the road, especially if they have to do turns , like on a circle track. On a dragstrip, wide tires are much safer with more rubber on the road. Before each race, we use to put down some Clorox and then spin the tires in it to heat up the tires and the rubber becomes sticky, so it will hold the road better. Some drag cars still do that today, especially if they are running 7-8000+ hp.

My husband has both a Ferrari and a Maserati.... we were in the Maserati at the weekend
 
(y) Like Oldman, several of my drag cars have gone over 150 mph in a 1/4 mile. As well as more than a few of my street cars. The wife's current Camaro will do 180 mph. ( b-4c police pursuit package). But, What's really fun is going over 100 mph in a wingless sprint car along with 25 others, and then having to turn left. :love::eek:
